Celebrated around the country by the African-American community for 160 years, Juneteenth commemorates the date in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to announce that the Civil War had ended and all enslaved people had been freed. Juneteenth (officially Juneteenth National Independence Day) became a federal holiday in 2022.
