As our nation approaches its 250th anniversary, you may be looking for a good book to read to mark the occasion. The Springmoor Library offers residents a number of appropriate books (both fiction and nonfiction) to consider.
The book 1776, for which David McCullough won the Pulitzer Prize, comes readily to mind. It weaves together events of 1776 with personal narratives and is thoroughly documented. It does not cover the entire Revolutionary War but gives a good overview of its causes and the events of the first year. It’s a very readable and informative volume.
Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow is often called the definitive biography of this important figure in US history. The hit Broadway musical and movie were based on this book, which provides valuable insight into the man responsible for laying America’s economic foundation. Another Pulitzer Prize winner.
To Rescue the Constitution: George Washington and the Fragile American Experiment by Bret Baier focuses on how George Washington emerged as the leader of the Constitutional Convention of 1787. The author recounts three specific ways in which Washington brought the young country together—and prevented it from collapsing—with his quiet, steady leadership.
1775: A Good Year for Revolution by Kevin Phillips presents a case for 1775 being a more important year for revolution than 1776 because of political realignment taking place and crucial encounters like Lexington and Concord and the Battle of Bunker Hill.
There are many other books in our library related to the founding of America, including biographies of our Founding Fathers. They are displayed in the area on your left as you enter the library. Included will be copies of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.
Thank you to resident Betty Bridges for these book descriptions and for all she does as our volunteer librarian. She is supported by the Library Committee of the Residents Association. Springmoor’s library contains several thousand books, and we also offer six reading rooms well-stocked with paperbacks.

Residents and their guests had the opportunity to hear a range of beautiful and inspiring musical selections focusing on resilience. In addition to the full chorus, soloists and a small vocal ensemble shared their talents with an appreciative audience.

Springmoor residents have multiple opportunities each month to enjoy live music, and the band Capital Transit is a favorite! The Triangle-based group recently brought their tight harmonies and energetic instrumentation (keyboard, guitar, sax, flute, and hand percussion) to our auditorium. Fun selections included oldies pop from the ‘50s–‘70s.
