NABJ hosts 34th annual student journalist workshop at NC A&T 03/23/2026

During Women’s History Month, I want to give a special thanks to my former college professor, Mrs. Nagatha Tonkins, who has since retired but left behind a powerful legacy.

More than 30 years ago, she advocated for the National Association of Black Journalists student short course to come to North Carolina A&T. What began with just A&T students eventually expanded to colleges across the country, opening doors for so many aspiring journalists.

Programs like this are essential, especially for HBCUs, which are often underfunded, overlooked, and lack access to the same resources as other institutions.

As a former student, I witnessed Mrs. Tonkins’ relentless determination to secure opportunities and funding so her students could compete on equal footing. She refused to accept “no,” and because of her advocacy, countless journalists have gone on to build successful careers. It's the reason I now come back to help teach the program along with other professionals.

Her impact is lasting, and her work is a reminder of why programs like these matter so deeply.

The short story below reflects just how essential these opportunities truly are.
