⚽🏟️ World Cup Stadiums Through an Architect's Lens | Part 3
BC Place in Vancouver is a powerful example of how great design can give new life to an existing structure.
Originally opened in 1983 as the world's largest air-supported dome, the stadium was transformed in 2011 with the addition of the world's largest cable-supported retractable roof. Inspired by the mechanics of a bicycle wheel, the innovative system allows the venue to shift from open-air to enclosed in just minutes.
Combined with its illuminated ETFE façade, BC Place has become both an engineering landmark and a defining feature of Vancouver's skyline.
A reminder that sometimes the most sustainable solution isn't replacement—it's reinvention.

💧 Did You Know?
As North Carolina experiences drought conditions, it's worth remembering that some of the most impactful water conservation strategies are built directly into the places where we live, work, and gather.
A few facts:
🚽 Toilets account for nearly 30% of indoor residential water use.
🚿 Standard showerheads use up to 2.5 gallons of water per minute, while WaterSense-labeled models use 2.0 gallons per minute or less—saving at least 20% without sacrificing performance.
🧺 Washing machines account typically for 15-22% of a home's indoor water use, making laundry fixtures another key opportunity for water-efficient design choices.
These numbers highlight an important reality: design decisions made today influence resource consumption for decades.
From high-efficiency plumbing fixtures to water-efficient appliances and thoughtful system selection, we have an opportunity to create buildings that are both functional and resilient.
Sustainable design isn't just about reducing environmental impact—it's about making smarter use of the resources available to us.

🏟️ World Cup Stadiums Through an Architect’s Lens: Estadio BBVA, Monterrey
As we continue exploring 2026 FIFA World Cup stadiums, Estadio BBVA stands out as a strong example of architecture shaped by context, culture, and landscape.
Known as “El Gigante de Acero” (The Steel Giant), the stadium reflects Monterrey’s industrial identity while also responding to its surrounding environment.
✨ Key design elements:
🔩 Industrial identity expressed in form
A fluid aluminum skin wraps the stadium, echoing the city’s steel industry and manufacturing heritage.
🏔️ A framed landscape experience
The cantilevered roof is designed to capture views of Cerro de la Silla, making the mountain part of the spectator experience.
🌿 Landscape-led planning
Native planting, permeable systems, and over 1,000 trees replace conventional hard paving, helping reduce heat and manage stormwater.
More than a stadium, Estadio BBVA shows how design can connect architecture to place in a meaningful way.
A reminder that in architecture, context is the starting point—not an afterthought.

We're excited to see our client Rock Solid Warrior featured in Triangle Business Journal as they continue their growth and expansion into the new Sports Facility in Rolesville.
Rock Solid Warrior will occupy an 11,000-square-foot facility featuring obstacle-course training inspired by the hit show American Ninja Warrior. The expanded space will provide new opportunities for athletes of all ages to develop strength, agility, and confidence.
Construction is well underway on the larger multi-purpose sports complex, which will bring together a diverse mix of athletic programs, including Rock Solid Warrior, basketball, and ice hockey, along with on-site dining.
We're proud to be part of a project that will bring energy, opportunity, and community to Rolesville. Stay tuned for construction updates as this exciting facility takes shape.

🏟️ World Cup Stadiums Through an Architect's Lens: SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles
As the world prepares for the FIFA World Cup, we're taking a closer look at some of the venues that will host soccer's biggest stage. The 2026 tournament will be played across 16 stadiums in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, each presenting its own architectural and engineering challenges.
First up is SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles—a project that demonstrates how architecture, engineering, and technology can come together to solve complex spatial and environmental challenges.
A few features that define this stadium:
• Indoor–Outdoor Canopy System
A translucent ETFE roof spans both the stadium and its surrounding public realm. Floating independently above the seating bowl, it allows natural light and airflow while providing environmental protection.
• Subterranean Bowl Strategy
Due to its location beneath LAX flight paths, the playing field and lower seating bowl were excavated approximately 100 feet below grade. This reduced the building's visible mass while maintaining full spectator capacity.
• Seismic Isolation System
The roof structure and seating bowl are structurally separated and supported on seismic isolators, allowing them to move independently during seismic events.
• Infinity Screen
A 360-degree, dual-sided 4K video board is suspended within the roof structure, creating a continuous visual field and redefining the spectator experience.
What stands out most is that each of these features serves a purpose beyond aesthetics. Every design decision responds to a specific challenge—whether climate, aviation regulations, seismic activity, or spectator experience.
The result is a stadium where technical constraints become drivers of architectural expression, and where performance and identity are inseparable.
