“If I hadn’t gone to school, I would still be herding cattle. I wouldn’t know how to read or write my own name, let alone dream of becoming a doctor.”

On World Day Against Child Labor, we are sharing the story of Djene, who was forced to take on adult responsibilities at a young age to help support his family as a shepherd. Today, he attends Speed School classes every day, while the program’s Self-Help Group component is helping his guardians build sustainable sources of income.

Important discussions during a sensemaking workshop on the AEP Guideline — a practical operational guidance translating Accelerated Education Program policy into day-to-day implementation — highlighted the need for stronger collaboration, practical implementation, and sustainable pathways to improve access to and quality of education across Ethiopia.

Participants emphasized the importance of clear and flexible transition pathways, enabling learners to move seamlessly between formal, non-formal, and alternative education. Strengthening the integration of student transition and learning data into the Education Management Information System (EMIS) was also identified as key to supporting evidence-based planning and decision-making.

Balancing quality, scalability, and cost-effectiveness remains critical, alongside strengthening teacher capacity through improved training and competency-based approaches. Enhancing accountability, risk mitigation, and resource mapping were also highlighted as priorities for effective delivery. The discussions further underscored the importance of digital learning opportunities — especially for pastoralist and hard-to-reach communities — as a key driver of inclusive education.

The vision is clear: One AEP Guideline that promotes inclusive, adaptable, and evidence-based learning pathways for all learners in Ethiopia.
