Now here's something to crooner about.
No wonder the anthem sounds so triumphant! ⚽️
In 1990, Luciano Pavarotti’s powerful rendition of Nessun dorma from Puccini’s opera Turandot, performed with his trio The Three Tenors, became the unofficial anthem of the World Cup in Italy. The performance captivated a global audience, especially among football fans, and the recording of the concert went on to become the best selling classical album in world history.
Two years later, inspired by the operatic success of Italia ’90, the UEFA Champions League commissioned English composer Tony Britten to write it a new anthem as part of its rebrand. Britten based his composition on Handel’s Zadok the Priest, a piece traditionally performed at British royal coronations. The result was a grand, orchestral anthem featuring lyrics in UEFA’s three official languages: English, French, and German. The chorus is set to the exclamations "Die Meister! Die Besten! Les grandes équipes! The champions!" Today, it is a fixture of every Champions League match.
