Big Tech is building AI data centers in our communities, and Black neighborhoods are paying the price with dirtier air, higher energy bills, and strained water supplies. That's not progress.
The NAACP has been fighting back through policy, the courts, and fierce advocacy, but the work — and discussions around it — must continue.
Ahead of , on June 17, at 5 p.m. ET, NAACP's own Abre' Conner will join Seattle-based activist and digital creator Evan Yells at Clouds ( on Instagram) for an IG Live conversation on his page, diving into how data center fights are "localized freedom work" and democracy in action. Memorial Day is a chance for us to pause as a community and recognize the extraordinary individuals whose bravery and commitment shaped the freedoms and rights we treasure today.

BREAKING: NAACP has officially filed a major lawsuit challenging Tennessee’s new congressional map, arguing the redistricting plan illegally discriminates against Black voters. ⚖️🗳️
According to the lawsuit, Republican lawmakers pushed the map through using a rushed process that critics say limited public debate, ignored testimony, and shut down meaningful discussion of alternative proposals.
The legal challenge argues the new district lines violate both the 14th and 15th Amendments by weakening Black voting power and dismantling the state’s only majority-Black congressional district.
Critics say the changes effectively erased a district that had long given one of Tennessee’s largest Black communities a stronger voice in Congress.
The NAACP is also seeking emergency legal action to block implementation of the map while the case moves through the courts.
Derrick Johnson condemned the redistricting effort, arguing that lawmakers intentionally targeted minority political representation and warning about what he described as a dangerous rollback of voting rights protections.
The case is quickly becoming part of a much larger national battle over redistricting, voting access, and political representation ahead of future elections.
Supporters of the Tennessee map argue legislatures have broad constitutional authority to draw district boundaries and say the maps comply with current legal standards.
Opponents argue partisan gerrymandering and racial vote dilution are increasingly being used to lock in political power and weaken fair representation.
The lawsuit is now expected to become one of the highest-profile voting rights battles in the country.
