We’re thrilled to announce the early planning stages of an immersive theatrical event: “Juliet and Her Romeo” — a bold, high-energy reimagining of the world’s most iconic love story, presented within the breathtaking setting of Villa Kathrine.

Featuring updated language that preserves the poetry, passion, and unforgettable moments audiences know and love, this original adaptation brings Shakespeare’s tragedy closer than ever before — “from first glance to final breath, all within arm’s reach.”

Created specifically for the Villa, “Juliet and Her Romeo” is designed to blend immersive storytelling, historic atmosphere, and community collaboration into an unforgettable theatrical experience.

Throughout this summer and fall, we will be hosting table reads and developmental workshops as the production continues to evolve. The current projected cast includes 13 actors (4 women and 9 men), and additional production and crew positions will also be available. Slated for performances in late May and early June!

I just learned about something called the “authenticity paradox,” which refers to the contradiction that the more consciously people try to appear authentic, the more staged or performative that authenticity can become.

In modern society, being seen as “real,” genuine, or unfiltered is highly valued, but once authenticity becomes socially rewarded through attention, approval, relationships, money, or status, people often begin performing authenticity itself.

The roots of this idea go back centuries. Ancient societies generally focused more on duty, religion, and fulfilling social roles than on expressing a unique inner self. The modern obsession with authenticity developed later during the Enlightenment and Romantic periods, when thinkers like Jean-Jacques Rousseau argued that society distances people from their natural selves. Later philosophers such as Søren Kierkegaard, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Martin Heidegger explored whether people genuinely choose their values or simply conform to society and “the crowd.”

The paradox became especially visible in the modern era through advertising, celebrity culture, therapy culture, branding, and social media. Today, people often carefully curate the appearance of vulnerability, relatability, rebellion, or “realness” online.

Even nonconformity can become a recognizable aesthetic. The paradox ultimately raises a difficult philosophical question: if identity is constantly shaped by culture, incentives, relationships, and environment, is authenticity something real that can be uncovered, or just another social performance?
