Immature oocytes are reproductive cells that have not yet completed their meiotic division inside the o***y.

Immature oocytes, distinguished by their prominent central nucleus, stand in contrast to mature oocytes, which have completed meiosis and exhibit a condensed nucleus. The oocyte and its surrounding cumulus cells are contained within a structure called a follicle, which provides the necessary environment for the oocyte’s growth and development.

The completion of oocyte maturation is complex and involves a delicate interplay of hormones, growth factors, and cellular interactions.

Both of these stages of oocytes, immature and mature alike, are suitable for Intracytoplasmic S***m Injection (ICSI) after in vitro culture.

ICSI isn’t new in equine reproduction—it’s been around for 30 years—but it’s being used more now than ever.

A big reason is that the process has become more reliable and efficient. OPU techniques have improved, lab work is more consistent, and embryo development rates are higher than they were in earlier years, making outcomes more predictable.

It also gives breeders more flexibility with timing and genetics, which has become increasingly important in modern programs. Because of this combination of improved success rates and practical advantages, ICSI is now used far more routinely rather than being reserved for select cases.

Oocytes, commonly referred to as a mare’s “eggs,” are the foundation of embryo production and collecting the oocytes is the first step towards utilizing ICSI to create your next foal.

▪️Every follicle contains a potential oocyte, the number of follicles a mare produces can vary between cycles.
▪️During the aspiration each follicle is flushed with fluid, scraped by a needle, and drained multiple times to extract the oocyte.
▪️After all follicles are aspirated, the fluid is filtered and we begin our search to find the oocytes.
▪️The oocytes are washed and placed into a holding media before being sent to the ICSI lab for maturation and eventual injection.

Dr. John Shrewsbury is the Staff Veterinarian at our 𝙊𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙖, 𝙁𝙡𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙖 location. Originally from Bardstown, Kentucky, he earned his veterinary degree from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine and completed his clinical training at the University of Florida. With a lifelong connection to the equine industry and hands-on experience in racing, mixed animal practice, and equine medicine, Dr. Shrewsbury is passionate about supporting the horses and people who shape the industry. Outside of work, he enjoys hunting, fishing, hiking, and spending time with his dog, Pablo.

We often get asked by prospective clients how the process works, and what we can say with confidence is that it often looks different depending on the client.

✅ Many clients already have veterinarians and breeding managers that they are working with who are performing aspirations. In that case, their team simply ships the oocytes back to our lab to complete the ICSI process.

✅ Some choose to have us visit their facility to assist with aspirations as they may not have a specialist in place that they are already working with in that area.

✅ Others choose to bring their mare(s) here to our facility in Purcell, OK to undergo the full management and process from start to finish.
