Today Counseling helped facilitate the ASVAB for cadets. The ASVAB helps cadets identify their aptitude for jobs. Later they will take an interest inventory and be able to cross index their strengths and abilities. While not testing they enjoyed a host of activities courtesy of the Oklahoma National Guard Recruiting Command.
Some of 1st Platoon’s check in calls will be tomorrow. As we’re sure you’ve heard from your cadet, 1st is a very large platoon and takes a little more time to get through, so we will resume tomorrow after school. We apologize for any inconvenience. Have a great evening Thunderparents!
Parental check-in calls will be tomorrow (3rd Platoon) due to the holiday. Happy President's Day!
This week in the Careers course, cadets are learning about self-management skills: how to organize tasks in order to avoid falling behind. TCP offers lots of opportunities to practice self-management in cadets' personal lives. In Careers, they learn to extend this knowledge to school and the workplace.
This week in Life Coping Skills, we discussed taking risks. Risks are a part of life, so learning how to calculate risks is an important skill to have. Cadets started reading the LS textbook "Power Source," had group discussions about risk taking, and engaged in activities to help them weigh out consequences of potential risks.
We are excited to start our 60th cycle of cadets! At TCP we practice what we preach when it comes to continually improving. For 60 cycles we have been honing and improving our approaches to helping kids change their lives and that is why we expect great things from Cycle 60!
We also have several new initiatives we are starting this cycle in order to best help the youth of Oklahoma and their families. One of those will be our monthly parental check-ins. Once a month, the counseling staff will reach out to our cadets' families. Sustained change can only occur if their is successful partnership between TCP and the guardians of our cadets. Below is a list of contact times:
1st Monday of the month- 1st Platoon
2nd Monday of the month- 2nd Platoon
3rd Monday of the month- 3rd Platoon
4th Monday of the month- 4th Platoon
Calls will be between 3:30 and 4:30. Don't worry if you do not know your cadets platoon yet.
Thunderbird Counseling is planning on creating more educational videos for the parents of our cadets. Past and future parents of Thunderbirds, what parenting topics would you like to see covered?

This is a fantastic resource for those who qualify.
Oklahoma’s Promise allows eighth-, ninth-, 10th- and 11th-grade students from families with an income of $60,000 or less to earn a college tuition scholarship. This is a great opportunity for Oklahoma students, but they have to be enrolled before they start their senior year of high school.

Last but not least in our series on behavior management: Positive Punishment. We hope you've enjoyed our videos. If there is topic relating to counseling or parenting that you would like to see a video on, please let us know in the comment section!
Negative punishment is a great option for low to moderate level bad behavior. Check out the video for some useful tips.
Negative reinforcement is easy to fall into but should be avoided as it is energy consuming and produces poor long term results.
