The loss of Captain Spencer Long and his family—Katrina, Reid, Thayne, and Gage in a canyoneering accident—is a devastating loss for Provo Fire & Rescue and for our entire fire family.

For 17 years, Captain Long proudly served the Provo community. His deep love for the outdoors and passion for serving others led him to become a member of our Wildland, Mountain Rescue, and SRT Teams, where his skills, dedication, and willingness to serve made a lasting difference.

But Spencer was more than a captain and firefighter. He was a brother, friend, mentor, and an important part of our Provo Fire family. The loss of Spencer and his family has left a void that cannot be filled.

In the days ahead, we will stand together, support one another, and carry their memory with us. We are grateful for the outpouring of support from our community and the fire service as we grieve this unimaginable loss.

Our hearts remain with the Long, Gubler, and Vernon families, their loved ones, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing them. Spencer, Katrina, Reid, Thayne, and Gage will forever be a part of the Provo Fire family, and they will never be forgotten.

Lydia, please know that you are not alone. We are always here for you, and we will continue to stand beside you in the days, months, and years ahead.

We will remember them. We will honor them. And we will carry them with us, always.

Please join us in welcoming Firefighter/Paramedics Chad Brooks and Cameron Bledsoe to the Provo Fire & Rescue family!

🔥 Chad Brooks joins us from Orem Fire, bringing five years of fire service experience. Chad also served eight years in the U.S. Marine Corps and currently serves in the Navy Reserve. Originally from Las Vegas, Chad and his wife have been married for nine years and have two children, ages 8 and 5.

🔥 Cameron Bledsoe joins us from Kaysville Fire, where he has served for four years, and brings an additional seven years of part-time experience with Payson Fire. Cameron was born in Orem and raised in California. He and his wife have been married for five years.

We’re excited to have Chad and Cameron bring their experience, skills, and dedication to Provo Fire & Rescue and our community. We’re proud to welcome them aboard and look forward to seeing the impact they’ll make!

As Provo City announced earlier this week, under the direction of the Provo Fire & Rescue , fireworks are prohibited citywide due to ongoing fire conditions. We appreciate our residents’ desire to celebrate the holiday safely, which is why Provo City has provided support for a fireworks show on Utah Lake, providing a safe and enjoyable way for families to celebrate together.

As shown on the map, all of Provo City remains under a fireworks discharge ban through July 25. Beginning July 26, personal fireworks are prohibited statewide under Utah law.

Looking for a way to celebrate? We encourage everyone to enjoy the professional fireworks show hosted by the Utah Lake Authority. Professionally managed displays provide a safe and memorable way to celebrate Pioneer Day while helping reduce the risk of wildfire.

Since the Fourth of July, our area has experienced continued hot, dry conditions with little to no monsoon rainfall. Until we receive several days of widespread rain, the wildfire risk remains too high to safely allow personal fireworks.

We know this may be disappointing, but protecting our community, neighborhoods, foothills, and open spaces is our highest priority.

Thank you for your understanding and for helping keep Provo safe this Pioneer Day.

Thank you to everyone who stood along the procession route yesterday to honor Captain Spencer Long and his family.

Your flags, your quiet presence, and your moments of respect meant more than words can express. The outpouring of support from our community and our brothers and sisters in the fire service was a powerful reminder that no one grieves alone. A huge thanks also goes to all the law enforcement agencies that helped along the way.
