Many Americans Try Retirement, Then Change Their Minds
Sue Ellen King had circled her retirement date on the calendar: March 8, 2015.
She had worked as a critical care nurse and nursing educator at University of Florida Health (UF Health) in Jacksonville, Fla., for 38 years; co-workers joked that she was there when the hospital’s foundation was laid, which happened to be true. So the send-offs went on for days — parties in the units where she had worked, a dinner in her honor, gifts including a framed photo signed by colleagues.

Bad Social Security advice cost recipients $131 million, report finds
A recent report estimates that 9,224 widow and widower beneficiaries age 70 and above were underpaid approximately $131.8 million after getting misled by bad advice.
Be on the lookout for erroneous Social Security advice that could cost you.
Making a decision as to when to start claiming Social Security benefits can be fraught with risks.
And there's one more danger many retirees may not be aware of: getting botched advice from the Social Security Administration.
A recent report from the agency's Office of the Inspector General estimates that 9,224 widow and widower beneficiaries age 70 and above were underpaid approximately $131.8 million.
The report also projects that Social Security will underpay 1,899 beneficiaries by about $9.8 million annually when they turn 70.
Those estimates are based on a random sample of 50 beneficiaries that led the office to conclude that 11,123 recipients could be eligible for a larger monthly benefit.
The research found that claimants were not informed that they had the ability to take widow or widower's benefits while delaying their own retirement benefits, which would allow those checks to increase.
"We did not find any evidence SSA had informed claimants of the option to delay their retirement application when they applied for benefits, as required," the inspector general's report states.
"We also found that SSA did not have controls in place to alert its employees when they should inform widow[er]s of their option to delay their applications for retirement benefits."
The Social Security Administration said it is committed to improving its procedures in a written response to the report.

Here's how much you need to earn to be part of the 1 percent
New data from the IRS shows the minimum levels of adjusted gross income that top taxpayers earned in 2015.
The tax data likely reveals just part of the financial picture for the top tiers of U.S. taxpayers, according to one tax expert.
How do you stack up against the wealthiest Americans?
To be a 1 percenter, you need to have an adjusted gross income of at least $480,930, according to the latest data from the IRS, which looked at income statistics for tax year 2015. The top 1 percent accounted for 1.4 million individual income tax returns — out of 141.2 million total — that year.
If that income cutoff isn't dispiriting enough, to be part of the top 0.1 percent, which represented 141,205 returns in 2015, your adjusted gross income needed to be at least $2.2 million. Entry to the top 0.01 percent, representing 14,120 returns, required adjusted gross income of $11.9 million or more.
The top 0.001 percent had adjusted gross income of at least $59.4 million that tax year. Just 1,412 returns came from those taxpayers.
In comparison, the adjusted gross income for the top 50 percent of individual income tax returns was $39,275. (See chart below; click to enlarge.)

How getting married can mess up your Social Security
If you were previously married for 10 years or more, you may be eligible to collect Social Security benefits on your ex-spouse's record.
Remarrying generally makes it so that you cannot collect your ex-spouse's benefits.
Experts recommend you assess your Social Security prospects before that second trip down the aisle.
You may want to rethink that second walk down the aisle if you are approaching retirement, and counting on income from Social Security.

6 things every adult should know about taxes
The transition to adulthood is sometimes hard to detect, but one sign you've arrived is if you know a handful of things about income taxes. Here are six things that tax pros say every adult should understand.
1. How tax brackets work
There are seven federal tax brackets, ranging from 10% to 39.6% this filing season. The country’s progressive tax system means that people with higher taxable incomes are subject to higher tax rates, and people with lower taxable incomes are subject to lower tax rates. Basically, the government divides taxable income into chunks — brackets — and each chunk is taxed at the corresponding rate.

Only 25 percent of Americans know this effective tax-saving strategy is legal
Many Americans are confused about which tax-saving strategies are actually legal, according to NerdWallet's 2018 Tax Study. As a result, millions of people filing taxes could be missing out on money-saving deductions.
One such strategy is to fund an IRA after December 31 but before the tax deadline, yet "75 percent of Americans think contributing to or opening an IRA after the end of the year to reduce their taxable income is illegal," the personal finance site reports.

The 'IRS' has issued a warrant for my arrest
Tax fraudsters are aggressive and use threatening phone calls while impersonating IRS agents, and the scams remain a major threat to taxpayers.
Surefire signs of a scam? The IRS will never demand immediate payment or ask for financial information over the phone, threaten to sic law enforcement on you or refuse an appeal.
The Internal Revenue Service has apparently issued an arrest warrant "on my name."
