“Wow! You’re so talented”, is a common well-meaning statement yet brushes over the reality of developing craftsmanship, discipline, and sleepless nights of practice. Where the word “Talent” is so easily handed out like candy in our modern age, let’s consider the candid reflection of Milt Kahl: “Actually, I don't really draw that well. It's just that I don't stop trying as quickly. I keep at it. I happen to have high standards and I try to meet them. I have to struggle like hell to make a drawing look good.”
As a student, there is much uncertainty and struggle with perfectionism or impostor-syndrome when learning the fundamentals of any skill. Our inner critic subconsciously compares us to the heroes we dangerously deify, believing ourselves perpetually below them. An all too common shared fear that creatives wrestle with, even for professionals. However, that’s just it, a mind-game of perspective and Milt Kahl reminds us that we don’t have to be the best from the start when the path to getting good at anything is paved with small imperfect steps. Just keep trying.
Whether you are rigging, modeling, animating, designing, or whichever role you find yourself gravitating to, it is in your individual will to reframe work from being perfect right away, back to the fresh eyes of a beginner inspired by the blazing passion of his heroes. It’s good to set high standards, they act as road maps similar to gathering resources for a moodboard, fitness goal for the body, or recipes for a dish. It’s all about the will to try, try, and try again before taking a well-deserved break.

If you want the audience to believe in your character, you have to believe in them first.
As we dive deeper into our series highlighting Disney’s Nine Old Men, we look back to this great insight from Ollie Johnston: "I thought of the character being real, a living person, not a drawing."
When you are deeply involved in a shot, it is incredibly easy to start thinking of a character purely in terms of assets or an object you are trying to animate. You see a head controller, a hand rig, a set of blendshapes, or a curve in the graph editor. The second you move a character without a psychological reason behind it, the character instantly reverts back to being just a lifeless rig. Ollie’s approach reminds us that every movement needs a psychological root. A real person does not just move their arm; they reach out because they are trying to comfort someone, or they cross their arms because they feel defensive. Before your character takes a single step, you need to know what they are thinking, what they are afraid of, and what they want in that exact moment.
Our instructors will take you past the technical mechanics to help you find the inner life of your character. Want to learn more about how to start your 3D animation journey? Visit AnimSchool.edu today!
