Why Do I Love Waterford Upstart?

When my first three kids were little, I was a “fabulous” mom. With my education degree and the necessary skills behind it, all three of my older kids learned to read by the time they were 4. I even worked consistently to improve my third child’s speech disorder. I thought I had it all figured out!

Then 8 years later, my 4th child came along. I was soooo busy. I just didn’t have time to teach him how to read. I was disappointed in myself. Was I now a “bad” mother?

I saw an advertisement for Waterford Upstart. It promised free in-home instruction for Pre-K students for 15 minutes a day. What? That sounded doable. The Waterford songs were what I used to teach my older kids their sounds and letters.

Fast forward a year later… The system was easy to implement and the activities and games made learning fun. Waterford provided great support. My child was no longer behind. He knew his sounds and letters and how to read short CVC words and sight words.

Was it a replacement for reading with my child? No. Computers can never replace human interaction in learning. Did it help me balance my time? Yes! I was able to focus my time on reading real books while Waterford supported learning through consistent practice. It’s a WIN-WIN!
