Helping Rhode Islander get their criminal records automatically expunged.

08/07/2026

On July 30, OpenDoors, in collaboration with AMOR, DARE, Clean Slate RI, Stop Torture RI, and Weber/RENEW hosted an Attorney General Primary Justice & Policy Debate at the Southside Cultural Center of Rhode Island.

The debate, moderated by Co-Executive Director Nick Horton, covered issues in housing, prison conditions, record expungement, probation, policing, immigration and more. The four candidates: Kimberly Ahern, Keith Hoffmann, Jason Knight, and Joseph Solomon Jr. drew parallels on a variety of the questions, drawing contrasts near the end of the two hours.

We want to thank all who were able to join us last Thursday for supporting the community, engaging with the work our respective organizations do, and for taking part in the democratic process ahead of the September 9 primary election.

Weber/RENEW and Clean Slate RI are teaming up for an informational and qualification session about expungement.

Have you been impacted by the criminal justice system? If qualified you can get your record expunged and get a 2nd chance. Your whole life shouldn’t be defined by a mistake from your past.
At this session you'll learn how expungement works, what can be expunged, if you're eligible, and how to apply.

We had an incredible time participating in Rhode Island’s 8th Annual Juneteenth Celebration at Roger Williams Park!

We are grateful for every opportunity to educate the public about the Clean Slate Act, Stop Torture RI’s efforts to improve conditions for individuals in solitary confinement, the push for body cameras for correctional officers, and other expungement and criminal justice reform legislation we proudly support.

As wonderful as the music, food, and fellow vendors were, the highlight of the day was connecting with the people who came out to celebrate. Community members welcomed Clean Slate RI with open hearts, open minds, and a genuine desire to support individuals who have earned a second chance through automated expungement.

Most importantly, we met several people who need our help—and that’s exactly why we do this work. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our table, shared their stories, asked questions, and joined us in building a more just and equitable Rhode Island.

The ACI death of Ross Amos raises concerns about medical neglect and accountability; The General Assembly remains unmoved 06/10/2026

Direct Action for Rights and Equality (DARE), the Stop Torture RI Coalition, and impacted family members are mourning the loss of Ross Amos, 34, who died on May 30, 2026, while incarcerated at the Adult Correctional Institutions (ACI) in Cranston. In response to the death, we held a vigil, with mock caskets representing lives lost to ACI neglect, outside the Rhode Island State House yesterday.

“Our loved ones are not sent to prison to die," said Melanie Perez, an organizer with Behind the Walls. "They are human beings, worthy of dignity, care, and coming home alive.”
