New data released by the Governor's Overdose Task Force shows that overdose deaths have decreased by 50% from 2022 levels, representing the lowest number of overdose deaths since 2012.
In 2025, 219 Rhode Islanders lost their lives to overdose. While this milestone is significant, 219 deaths is still far too many, and every life lost is a tragedy that reminds us how much work remains.
This achievement reflects a comprehensive harm reduction strategy that includes Project Weber/RENEW's Overdose Prevention Center, a major expansion of street outreach, and coordinated statewide efforts across prevention, treatment, recovery, and rescue services led by many organizations and partners across Rhode Island.
These results reaffirm what we know: Project Weber/RENEW's work in harm reduction saves lives. With access to naloxone, safer use supplies, healthcare, and compassionate support, people live and find care.
We also want to recognize the people and organizations whose dedication made this possible: the State of Rhode Island (including Rhode Island Department of Health and Rhode Island Executive Office of Health and Human Services), the Opioid Settlement Committee, City of Providence , peer-led harm reduction programs, people who use drugs, community members, outreach workers, first responders, healthcare providers, public health leaders, funders, recovery organizations, and policymakers who champion evidence-based approaches.
This achievement of saving lives belongs to all of us.
In a year when funding has been reduced and many organizations have been asked to do more with less, this milestone feels especially meaningful. To help us continue this lifesaving work, If we invite you to make a contribution using the link below.

Project Weber/RENEW (PWR) is Rhode Island’s largest peer-led harm reduction and recovery support organization, supporting people experiencing homelessness, substance use disorder, mental and physical health challenges, and barriers to healthcare access. Through low-barrier, trauma-informed services, PWR works to ensure people can access care, support, and resources in ways that are compassionate and responsive to their needs. PWR provides services through drop-in centers in Providence and Pawtucket, RI’s first overdose prevention center in Providence, and mobile outreach across the state.
In 2025, PWR served more than 7,000 individuals through over 22,500 service encounters. We offer a wide-array of comprehensive services, including: overdose prevention services, case management, harm reduction supply distribution, support groups, basic needs assistance, linkage to treatment and housing, support groups, HIV/Hep C testing, and linkage to care.

It was a great day for a cleanup! Our team and volunteers were out in Providence responding to a requested cleanup and helping keep our community safe and welcoming for everyone.
Just a reminder that we offer a syringe cleanup service for Providence residents through our Syringe Hotline. If you need a cleanup scheduled, call 401-236-4907 and our team will respond as quickly as possible.

We are incredibly grateful to The Champlin Foundation for their generous capital grant of $124,128 to support essential code compliance repairs at our new Pawtucket building at 36 Park Place.
These critical improvements will help create a stable, permanent home for our life-saving services in the Pawtucket and Central Falls communities for years to come. 🌱

We're excited to be at the Coastal Cultivator’s Classic this Saturday, May 16th at Hope Artiste Village in Pawtucket.
Our table will be stocked with harm reduction supplies and educational info. If you’re coming through, stop by, say hi, and grab what you need. We’re always happy to connect, answer questions, and share what harm reduction looks like in practice.

On Harm Reduction Day, May 7th, our team had the opportunity to slow down and spend meaningful time together through drama therapy provided by 2nd Act and a delicious meal generously donated by PONI.
The day felt especially meaningful as we celebrated two of our staff members, Tyrone and Nicole, who both earned their bachelor’s degrees this week. Watching them reach this milestone, especially while they continue to give so much to our community every day, was really special. We’re incredibly proud of them and grateful to share these moments together as a team. 💜
