Running AC at highway speeds is often more efficient than windows down. At speeds above 50 mph, open windows create enough aerodynamic drag to hurt fuel economy more than the AC compressor does. Below 45 mph, windows down wins. Most people assume AC always costs more fuel, it depends entirely on speed.

Running AC for just 10 minutes weekly prevents expensive compressor failure. A dormant compressor loses lubrication and seals dry out. The refrigerant itself carries the lubricating oil. If you go months without running it (like winter), you risk a $500–$1,500 compressor replacement. Running it briefly year-round costs almost nothing and can save you a major repair.
