Reentry Campus Program (RCP) helps current & formerly incarcerated people get a college education.
James Monteiro is the founder and director of the Reentry Campus Program. He works both within and outside the Adult Correction Institution of Rhode Island to ensure that currently and formerly incarcerated individuals have a pathway that is integrated into the support systems needed upon release. James dropped out of school in the eighth grade and spent most of his adult life in and out of the penal system. The last time James was incarcerated he was doing a ten year sentence in one of the country’s most violent prison systems, Baltimore Maryland’s Penitentiary. It was there that James first went back to school earning an Associate’s degree in Psychology with Honors and, and upon release, earned a bachelor’s degree in Community Development at Roger Williams University. James has won the Rhode Island NAACP Joseph Lecount Award for his work founding the Billy Taylor House; a program that provides workforce development and enrichment opportunities to youth ages fifteen to twenty-one in James’ childhood neighborhood, the Mount Hope community of Providence. He has been named as one of Rhode Island’s “15 to Watch” for his work in youth programs that address violence in the city and prepare the next generation of Providence leaders.

This fall RCP will be on the move, all around the country to talk about the successful model we use in Rhode Island. We can’t wait to come together and collaborate with other advocates.

PLEASE WELCOME RCP’S NEW BOARD CHAIR ANDRES IDARRAGA!
We are so excited and grateful for this new addition to our team. Andres has played such a pivotal role in advocating for incarcerated people in Rhode Island and helping to provide further access to education. His journey comes full circle as he helps lead an organization working inside the same Rhode Island correctional system where his own educational transformation began!
Our Pathways Coordinator, Demi, is inside the prison EVERYDAY scheduling testing and working with students to make sure they are setup for success. RCP empowers students to have the tools they need to succeed and reduce recidivism in our community.

Executive Director, James, and Chief Operating Officer, Steven attended the Institute for Nonprofit Practice’s “Rhode Island Core Cohort” leadership retreat and came together to learn, build and grow with other Rhode Island advocates and community members.

RCP had the opportunity to present our work to Leadership Rhode Island.
Executive Director James Monteiro, Chief Operating Officer Steven Parkhurst, and team members Dan Trimble, Bobbie Henderson, and Gahlil Oliveira shared how RCP is expanding access to higher education and creating meaningful pathways for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated students.
A huge thank you to Annalise, Carroll, and everyone at Leadership Rhode Island who came out to listen, learn, and engage with our work. We’re grateful for the opportunity to share RCP’s mission and the incredible progress being made by our students and team.
Education creates opportunity—and opportunity creates pathways forward!

Success isn’t measured only by passing a test. RCP doesn’t simply administer exams—it provides the support, encouragement, and preparation students need to keep moving forward.
