I founded , a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, to connect unused pianos with students, schools and community centers in at-risk communities, giving all children an opportunity to make music part of their lives. Founded on the notion that one piano can create 1000 musicians, Changing Keys is a long term solution to the music education crisis. Inspired by a New York Times article about the increasing number of pianos ending up in the trash, Boston’s “Play Me I’m Yours” public piano display and several volunteering experiences, Changing Keys is an innovative and transformative movement that truly acknowledges the assets available and resources necessary to create real and sustainable change. "Stephanie" first started taking piano lessons from me two years ago. After only a few lessons, I noticed she was frustrated and upset when she came into class each week. Although intelligent and determined, her family did not have the money or space for a piano, preventing her from being able to practice and progress at home. Eventually, I was able to help this student secure a small keyboard and I have witnessed a transformation in her self-esteem, attitude and skill-level. She now comes to her piano lesson ecstatic, focused and eager to learn. The purpose of Changing Keys is to recreate this moment, this turning point in a student’s musical career and give them the opportunity to accomplish what they never thought was possible. (Student's name has been changed to protect her privacy).

Today, Brooke and Alissa stopped by the Academy for Career Exploration to deliver their new piano! The Academy for Career Exploration does not currently have a music department, but this was the first step toward starting one.
