Although this photo is from a past event, I am thrilled to let you know that my dear friend Deborah Goodrich Royce and i will be together again, on Monday 2/23, at RJ Julia! We will be in conversation about BEST BOY, her brilliant new novel—a psychological thriller that captivated me on page one and kept me reading straight through until the shattering end.
A hallmark of Deborah’s work is the way she writes so poignantly about how ghosts of the past can return to shake up the present. In BEST BOY, the past comes back in the form of a letter, and Vivica Stevenson’s perfect Greenwich, Connecticut life is turned upside down.
Deborah writes with such deep understanding and compassion for her characters. She knows the film world so well, and I love the way she weaves that knowledge into the character of Vivica. She has created a setting so intriguing and seductive, we all want to live there—until that letter arrives.
Deborah is my bestie, and i absolutely love her. I’ve had the pleasure of doing lots of book events with her, and we always have so much fun. I promise you’ll have a great time on Monday, so please join us at wonderful RJ Julia Booksellers! No matter what, read BEST BOY. You’ll never feel the same about checking your mail again!!

When lies and betrayals are exposed, the perfect wedding becomes a nightmare in a gripping novel of psychological suspense by the New York Times bestselling author of Last Night and The Shadow Box.
Rhode Island’s picturesque Ocean House is the perfect setting for Kate Woodward and Conor Reid’s fairy-tale wedding weekend. But there may not be a happily ever after.

i love this photo with Marfie Lavendier at Print: A Bookstore
in portland, maine. it was taken a few years back, when i was giving a reading for THE BEAUTIFUL LOST... it brings on the second slide and …
“ode to a pair of half-mittens”
how long have i loved you, o mittens?
how many years, each with the length of long, cold winters? countless winter walks and drives and snow forts and snowball fights and bird feeder fillings?
you came to me during dinner with marfie and joe
at café miranda in rockland, maine,
as if magically knowing my favorite color, marfie knit you just for me. i sat there in that bright space, that colorful room, having delicious food with marfie and joe while a gale roared up from the harbor—a harbinger of the blizzard soon to hit. our parents were friends, our sisters were best friends, and i adore marf—have ever since we were children and lived on lincoln street. it’s funny, how our lives have sailed along on parallel currents: lincoln street in new britain; hubbard’s point and fenwick on the shoreline; cats, dogs, love of salt water, love of family, reading, writing, knitting... and so much more.
so, thank you, half-mittens. thank you, marfie. here we are, another winter with warm hands, with loving memories, with my favorite color blue... love you. 💙💙💙

i just had a wonderful lunch in mystic with my beautiful, brilliant sister maureen rice onorato. she is a poet, artist, sailor, sailmaker, fish whisperer, birder, lover of corsica and the aquitaine, reader of rex stout (and everything else), keeper of mim’s memory, and the dearest person i know. 🩵🌊💫⚓️
wild wind and waves at hubbard’s point!
my dear friend Carl Safina spoke with Oprah recently, and the conversation that ensued—and is out today—took my breath away.
carl has insight into animals like no other. it was spellbinding to hear him with oprah—she is unsurprisingly compassionate and knowledgable.
carl speaks owl (among other species, but if you follow me here, you know how i love owls…)
many of you know alfie— the screech owl carl writes about in a series of books, starting with ALFIE & ME.
i am honored to be an artistic affilliate of The Safina Center…
carl… what about cats???

sometimes (always), but especially when the world is a certain way (like now), we need books.
these photos are from yesterday, when i was doing research at the providence athenaeum. The Providence Athenaeum was founded in 1836; later, it incorporated the providence library of 1753.
when i was 25, a young writer in love with a young law student, i went to the athenaeum most days to write. we lived a few blocks down benefit street. i most often chose a desk on the mezzanine, and i wrote my first published short story there.
yesterday i looked in the card catalogue (an actual card catalogue—be still, my beating heart!!!)—and there were my novels. i’m not sure i can express what that meant to me.
i encourage you to visit your local library and walk through the stacks. you might be amazed by how real and true the books are, expressing multiple points of view, no matter the era in which they were written.
take heart—i am scared, too. believe in books.
do you love your library? please tell us about it—and your favorite librarian—here.
i love you.
