TV Tuesdays: On My Block | 2018 | Netflix | Brought to you by Shane Spring
On My Block isn't your typical coming-of-age television show. Usually, these types of shows are filled with suburban culture, wealthy kids, and a very filtered view of high school life through the repetitive display of partying, s*x, dating, etc. Yet, On My Block defies all of this is and is still so poignant. With a primarily Black and Hispanic cast, the show shows us a new type of reality set in inner city LA. As four teenagers deal with the challenges of starting high school, they learn what it means to live in a world with social barriers many teenagers don't experience.

Movie of the Week: A Fantastic Woman | 2017 | Sebastian Lelio | Brought to you by Everett Shen
Chile’s first Best Foreign Language Film winner is decidedly universal in its emotional scope. Its protagonist is Marina Vidal, a transgender woman thrown into a momentous battle for her right to mourn a deceased lover. Her world is one of many contrasts, in which moments of sublime self-affirmation can rapidly shape-shift into nightmares that humiliate and traumatize. Sebastian Lelio, a director with a history of portraying stigmatized women in his work, presents a character who often has no choice but to bend to those who insist on denying her humanity. The intimate, unadulterated depiction of Marina’s discomfort and solitude in these scenes highlight her vulnerability, and makes her resilience despite it all the more inspiring.
With its enchanting score and a striking debut by real-life trans singer Daniela Vega, A Fantastic Woman is not to be missed by anyone seeking to develop a greater empathy for their fellow human.
A Fantastic Woman is currently playing at the Princeton Garden Theatre
