Princeton University - Even under construction, Andlinger lab teaches On a spring day, the class walked into a cavernous construction site that is becoming the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment at Princeton University. Light, filtering from the open floors above, lined the gray concrete floors and the steel beams that cross the high ceiling. Construction…

Princeton University - Modern expertise builds bridge to ancient marvel Many engineering lectures concern themselves with cutting-edge technology but at a recent talk on bridge construction, Princeton professor Branko Glišić asked his audience to go back nearly 2,000 years.

TESTING, TESTING... 04/26/2014

Professor Branko Glisic and students did testing on Streicker Bridge on Princeton's campus last week as a 4-ton truck moved across it. Glisic oversaw the installation of special sensors in the bridge as it was being constructed to measure temperature, strain and vibration in the concrete. THE GREATEST DISASTER that never happened - all thanks to a Princeton senior thesis. The 99% Invisible radio show reports that Diane Hartley's 1978 senior thesis on structural engineering very likely (albeit circuitously) prevented the collapse of the iconic Citicorp building in NYC. Hartley was of course a student of David Billington, who is featured in the radio piece charmingly ranting about the importance of structural engineering. It's a must-listen: http://99percentinvisible.org/episode/structural-integrity/
