Barn To Yarn

Mother and daughter hand knitted, in home business. We have our own alpacas so we have a good supply of yarn. Our alpaca’s yarn is not dyed.

Our yarn is unique and special because it is from an individual alpaca. Each alpaca's fleece is kept separate from shearing till the end product either yarn or knitted item. We don’t have time to spin all the fleece ourselves so the fleece is processed into yarn at a USA mini-mill. It is the alpaca's natural color. But we do buy dyed alpaca yarn from our alpaca friends. We try to buy only from US

“Scrapie” hats, that is what I call these. The pattern allows me to use up scrapes (small amounts of left over yarn from other projects). My mother helps me pick out the five colors. It is fun to see how the colors blend together. Even using the same colors but in different order will change how the hat looks. It is a little time consuming to knit. The brim takes 3 hours for 2 inches. It is a corrugated 1X1 rib pattern alternating colors every other stitch. The yarn used is mostly 100% alpaca or a blend of alpaca with bamboo or silk or cotton. Hand wash, cold water, towel dry, shape and lay flat to air dry. Displayed on small size mannequin head. More information in comments of each photo. More fully lined mittens. Hand knitted by my mother and I. These mittens are warm because of two knitted layers. The lining is either from one of my brown alpacas named W***y or from one of my beige alpaca named Nemo. The lining is 80% alpaca and 20% bamboo. Bamboo is anti-fungal, soft and gives a heather tone color. Colored yarn is dyed by others that I bought at fiber festivals or online small businesses. The outside of the mittens are an alpaca blend (alpaca, merino, nylon). Pictures show part of the cuff turned up to show knit lining. I knit the cuff a little longer because when you reach for something, your coat sleeve rides up, leaving a gap for cold to get to your skin.

“Yurt” Hat that’s what I call these hats. When knitting these that is what I think of. First I knit the “walls”. Then I pick up the bottom stitches for the brim. The brim is knitted longer and then folded up and stitched to outside of the hat, making it a double layered brim. The double layer gives extra warmth to your ears, forehead and nape of your neck. Yarn is an alpaca blend. Hand wash, cold water, towel dry, shape and lay flat to air dry. Displayed on small size mannequin head. More information in comments of each photo. Snuggle Socks or Couch Potato Socks, that is what I call these socks. These socks are for when you are sitting on the couch, reading, watching TV, etc. Keep your toes and feet snugly warm. They are hand knitted with thicker yarn than usual for socks. (Sport weight 3 ply instead of fingering/sock weight) . The natural colored are from my alpacas. They are 80% alpaca, 20% bamboo. Bamboo has some anti-fungal properties, gives some strength and a heather tone to the color. The colored ones are hand dyed from friend’s alpacas and mixed with some wool. Size for adult women.
