Fine Line Proofs - Book Editing
I help with what matters before you query or publish. https://susanpiersonediting.substack.com/subscribe/ You wrote the book. My editing is gentle but exacting.
Copyediting & Proofreading
I share what I notice and what writers ask about when a manuscript is nearly ready for agents or readers. You’ve poured yourself into every page. And now you want to be sure what’s on the page is exactly what you meant. At Fine Line Proofs, I specialize in line editing, copyediting, and proofreading for fiction writers nearing the finish line—especially those who’ve don
Are we there yet? We’ve all heard it from the backseat.
It could be the same question sitting behind the version of your novel you’ve labeled “final”—the one you keep opening, even though you’re not sure what to do with it.
So is it “Are we there?” as much as—can I hand this off and finally reach the end?

“It is important to me that my stories exist in the way I want them to be read.”
When Chris first reached out to me, he was very clear.
He didn’t want his style changed.
He wasn’t looking for someone to smooth it out or make it sound more “standard.” The rhythm he’d built on the page mattered to him. He knew it was a little different. That was the point.
What he wanted was someone who wouldn’t come in and shred it.
It was my job to respect what he was doing without stripping away the voice that made it his.
That kind of care goes both ways.
Respect for the reader, yes, but just as much respect for the writer who put those words there in the first place.

I have some lovely news to share.
On March 14, I’ll be part of a local author event with 30 wonderful writers, and I’ll be there with my books.
There’s something special about stepping out from behind the desk and meeting readers in person, especially the kids, parents, and teachers these stories were written for.
If you’re nearby, I'd love to see you there.
Details are in the flyer, 😁 and I’ll share a reminder as we get closer. I’m simply grateful to be included in something that celebrates books and storytelling.

You don’t wrestle with words because you’re unsure.
You do it because they matter to you.
That’s care. And care is the beginning of good storytelling.
If this feels familiar, you’re exactly who I work with.

I loved diagramming sentences in school.
While everyone else groaned, I was quietly delighted. Give me a complicated sentence and I was in heaven.
I didn’t know it meant anything. I just loved English class.
I certainly didn’t know I’d become an editor one day, and not until my fifties.
It’s funny how the things we love early sometimes disappear for a while. Life fills in the space. Careers. Family. Responsibilities.
And then one day, the space opens again.
I’m connected to so many writers who say the same thing in reverse:
“I always wanted to write.”
Maybe it’s not late.
Maybe it’s timing.
I wrote more about this today.

Are your sentences leaving readers breathless or tripping over commas?
Even one misplaced—or missing—comma can throw off your story’s pacing, clarity, and flow.
I talk more about how small punctuation shifts can help your fiction read smooth, natural, and inviting.

Pull up a chair ☕ for "Coffee Talk with Susan," my newsletter for fiction writers nearing the finish line with their manuscript.
You’re so close to done.
The commas, the little fixes, the tiny flow things.
That moment when you’ve typed “The End” and start wondering:
What the heck do I do now?
That’s the stage of writing I spend most of my time in—working with fiction writers whose manuscripts are nearly ready for querying or publication.
And it’s also why I started a newsletter called Coffee Talk with Susan.
It’s where I share what I notice in manuscripts at this stage—and the questions writers often ask when they’re preparing their book for agents or readers.

This ... fiction writers.
Every draft you write has weight—grief, joy, reckoning, healing. Editing isn’t about smoothing that out. It’s about shaping the container so it can carry it.
Not tidying. Not pleasing.
Holding.
That’s the work. And it matters.

That’s why it matters how your words land.
Not louder.
Not faster.
But more you.
Thoughtful editing isn’t about changing meaning—it’s about protecting it.
