When a stroke happens, every minute matters. Yet many people don't know about the treatment that can make the biggest difference: a stroke thrombectomy.

Access to this treatment, and getting to the right hospital quickly, can change everything for a stroke patient's brain function. That's what World Stroke Thrombectomy Day is all about.

Watch as WMCHealth neuroendovascular surgeon Dr. Pankajavalli Ramakrishnan, MD, PhD explains what this procedure is, why it matters, and what MidHudson Regional Hospital is doing to make sure every patient gets the care they need.

A powerful reminder of what rapid, expert care and advanced technology can achieve.

Recently, a patient arrived at MidHudson Regional Hospital experiencing a severe stroke, caused by a blockage in a critical artery at the base of the brain. The patient arrived being comatose, with devastating and life-threatening outcomes at risk.

Thanks to rapid coordination and advanced treatment, our Neurosciences team administered clot-busting medication. They also quickly and successfully removed the blockage with a TIGERTRIEVER™ 17, an adjustable stent-retriever designed for thrombectomy in acute ischemic stroke.

Consequences of brain damage from a stroke can result in difficulty or loss of:
• Awareness, level of consciousness, becoming comatose
• Processing sensory information like touch, taste, and temperature
• Ability to move one's arms and legs, expressive language, vision, and maintaining balance
• Handling auditory processing and memory storage
• Facilitating communication between brain areas
• Managing goal-oriented tasks

The result? A remarkable recovery. The patient went from being comatose on arrival to showing no measurable neurological deficits shortly after the procedure, even before being taken off breathing support.

This outcome reflects the skill, speed, precision, and teamwork of our clinical teams—and the life-changing impact it has for patients and families when every minute matters.

We’re also proud that this case marks the first patient enrolled at MidHudson Regional Hospital in the COGNITIVE Trial, an important step forward in bringing cutting-edge neurointerventional research to the Hudson Valley.

Moments like this highlight what’s possible when innovation, expertise, and compassion come together, delivering the highest level of care close to home. Meet the care team, which includes:
Foreground: Eric Feldstein, MD, research fellow, Haley Pantle, ICU PA, Anyssa Griffin, IR Tech, Dr. Ramakrishnan, NIR Attending, Angela Kroff, NIR NP, Aida Lauder, IR RN, Brendan Dooley, IR Tech.

Remember the warning signs and BE FAST.
BEFAST is an acronym to help quickly recognize stroke symptoms: Balance, Eyes, Face, Arms, Speech, and Time, emphasizing immediate medical attention. Learn more: https://www.wmchealth.org/service-line/neurosciences/stroke
