Lewis’s most significant Christian writings include Mere Christianity, Out of the Silent Planet, The Great Divorce, The Screwtape Letters, and the universally acknowledged classics in The Chronicles of Narnia.

William Teulon Blandford Fletcher's Sacrament Sunday (1897) depicts a traditional Holy Communion service in a Church of England parish at the close of the nineteenth century as it had been observed for centuries. The scene stands in marked contrast to many modern perceptions of Anglican liturgy. The rector is vested not in the gaudy elaborate eucharistic vestments of Rome but in the simple choir dress characteristic of traditional Anglican practice. The Communion Table, arranged according to the prescriptions of the Book of Common Prayer, is adorned only with a plain fair white linen cloth, reflecting the sobriety and reverent restraint that long characterized historic Anglican worship.
The minister is portrayed from behind, his face unseen. The effect is striking. The viewer's attention is directed away from the personality of the officiant and toward the sacred action itself, conveying the Anglican conviction that the minister is not the focus of worship but a humble steward of the mysteries of God, faithfully administering Word and Sacrament within the life of the Church.
The congregation is depicted in quiet devotion and prayerful recollection. There is no worship band, no sense of performance or self-expression, nor any emphasis on horizontal fellowship; rather, the scene is marked by stillness, reverence and holy attentiveness. Fletcher's painting captures the classic vision of Anglican piety in which simplicity, humility, reverence and devotion combine to create an atmosphere of solemn beauty, directing the worshipper's gaze not toward man but toward God alone.

"Church of England clergy have long been required to subscribe to Anglicanism’s 16th-century confession, the Thirty-nine Articles, but the Protestant Episcopal Church unwisely chose not to require clerical subscription when it was formed in the 1780s. By the late 1970s, the Articles were relegated to a small-print section at the back of the American prayer book ominously titled “Historical Documents of the Church.” Ensuring that clergy embrace, and laity study, the Articles and our other often forgotten but official formularies (the 1662 Book of Common Prayer and the first and second Books of Homilies)—could help to fix the doctrinal incoherence Anglicans have grappled with for decades."
