This piece is part of the current exhibition “FIBER ALIVE” by Portland-based artist Hannah Kathleen!
“A subspecies of brown bear, the California grizzly bear was accused by European settlers of being an aggressive one-ton bear that was picking off all their livestock and attacking people. The “golden bears” were hunted, poisoned, trapped, and used for violent entertainment due to these supposed threats. The last bear in the wild was spotted in 1924, a little over 100 years since the settlers started moving into bear territory without permission. New paleontological data prove the bears were mostly herbivores and were similar in size to the grizzlies in Yellowstone today. So don’t believe them when they say “it was THIS BIG!”

Amur leopards live in the Russian Far East, where it meets China. Well-adapted to the bitter cold of the mountainous region, their incredible spotted fur makes everyone swoon. Poachers aim to fill the demand for their skins and bones. These leopards are solitary animals. They just want to jump 19 feet horizontally to ambush dinner in peace. However, scarce prey makes suppertime another challenge they have to deal with. Humans, with their farmland and need for warm clothing, once again, make things difficult for the locals. The most recent data suggest there are around 150 of these beasts in the wild. They need better protection before it’s too late.

This piece is part of the collection “FIBER ALIVE” / Mountain zebras live in small family groups in the mountains of South Africa. There are two subspecies of mountain zebra, and they no longer overlap in territory. Their populations were fragmented when hunters exterminated them for various reasons, including farm land and their striped skins. Mountain zebras have increased in numbers because of conservation efforts. Zebras are iconic, and the mountain zebra proves conservation efforts work.
