WWII Dog Tags

These gents always have outstanding impressions.

There are some mornings in history that begin without fanfare. No speeches. No cheering crowds. Just tired young men sitting shoulder to shoulder in landing craft, their rifles held a little tighter than usual, watching a dark coastline slowly take shape.

On the night of July 9–10, 1943, those men were headed for Sicily.

The operation was called Operation Husky, but there was nothing playful about it. The sea was rough. The wind pushed transport aircraft off course. Paratroopers found themselves scattered across the island, landing in vineyards, olive groves, and rocky fields miles from where they were supposed to be. Many would spend the rest of the night searching for one another, fighting in small groups, or simply doing whatever needed to be done with whoever happened to be beside them.

Down on the beaches, soldiers stepped into the surf carrying packs that seemed far too heavy for a man already burdened with uncertainty. They climbed ashore because someone had to go first.

History remembers Operation Husky as the invasion of Sicily—the campaign that opened the road to Italy and hastened the fall of Mussolini’s regime. But history is often written with arrows on maps.

The men who lived it remembered different things: the taste of dust, the weight of wet boots, the sound of a friend calling out in the darkness, and the relief of seeing daylight after a very long night.

More than 160,000 Allied soldiers took part in those first landings. Thousands more would follow. Some would never leave the island.

Today, we remember not only the victory, but the ordinary young Americans, Britons, Canadians, and their Allies who carried extraordinary burdens. They were mechanics, farmers, clerks, students, and laborers before the war. For a few weeks in the summer of 1943, they became the men who helped change its course.

Some came home with stories.

Too many became one.
