Things to do in Portland - A visitor's guide to Maine's most exciting city - mainetoday So you're visiting Portland, eh? It's a cool city with lots of amazing food - but you know that. Congress Street is a hub of art, shops and life. A quick walk toward the ocean will bring you to the Old Port, with its cobblestone streets, salty breezes and lots of ice cream and touristy stores.

Hand in Hand’s Parenting by Connection: In the Clinic, the Classroom and at Home
Friday August 12, 2016, 9:30 AM - 3:30 PM

Are you a mental health provider, early childhood educator, or allied professional who would like to offer some effective connection-based parenting tools to the families you work with? Parenting by Connection is an attachment-based, trauma-informed program that offers parents and other caregivers a set of concrete tools to foster strong connections with children while managing high emotions and handling challenging behaviors.

This workshop makes use of in-depth case studies and engaging experiential exercises to illustrate how the Parenting by Connection Program can be incorporated into different professional settings and how parents can bring these tools home to complement the work you are doing in the office, clinic, or classroom.

No experience with the Parenting by Connection program is necessary, but if you have already taken the Professionals Intensive in Parenting by Connection we would like to extend a special welcome. This workshop would be a great way to see the Parenting by Connection model in action in a variety of settings and to connect with other professionals who are incorporating these tools into their practice.

How childhood trauma affects health across a lifetime 04/03/2016

This summer's workshop in Hand in Hand's Parenting by Connection will train early childhood educators and mental health providers in a trauma-informed parenting program that strengthens parent-child connectedness (the most important buffer against the effects of adverse early experiences). To understand how critical this is, take a look at Nadine Burke Harris ' riveting TED Talk, and then join us to be trained in some concrete and effective tools to help children heal from the effects of these early challenges.

How childhood trauma affects health across a lifetime Childhood trauma isn’t something you just get over as you grow up. Pediatrician Nadine Burke Harris explains that the repeated stress of abuse, neglect and parents struggling with mental health or substance abuse issues has real, tangible effects on the development of the brain. This unfolds across…

The Mentally Healthy Preschool Classroom
Friday August 5, 2016, 9:30 AM - 3:30 PM

The mentally healthy preschool classroom, like the family, is built upon the co-regulation of emotion and cognition between adults and children within the context of strong attachment relationships. By examining the developmental course of self-regulation skills with a focus on the sensory systems, executive functions and attachment relationships, we will gain greater appreciation for the choreography that emerges between teachers and students in the journey toward self-regulation. This workshop is highly experiential and participants will explore a wide range of tools from the fields of expressive arts therapy and mindfulness meditation.
