But between this stage and our initial design by was all the collaboration and hard work Jonathan Rodriguez poured into the demo, rebuild, and new additions. Gnocchi is the official house plant and flower arrangement inspector around here. These passed inspection. Thank god.

Mr. Gnocchi is perched on a piece that is very dear to me. That coffee table's not from a showroom, it was my grandmother's, and the coral tucked into the driftwood base is a nod to the seashells my mom used to style it with. Some pieces you don't source. You inherit them and keep building around them. This one will always be with me ❤️

Do you have any inherited pieces that need a moment to shine?

The client sent me a photo of the freshly installed tile. My first response: “Wow. Fast and easy.” My second: “The very top row, second from the right, is upside down.”

That’s what a designer is for.

The travertine was inspired by the antiqued brick original to the house. We ordered samples, brought them to the fabricator to find countertops that worked with the tile, then decided on pattern (1/3 offset), joint treatment, and how the stone would be sealed.

The shelves, lighting, and styling from the elevation drawing are still going in.

Tile alone has dozens of decisions. A full remodel has thousands.

Before and after always feels like it's about the transformation. But the real story in this bathroom is the materials.

The original shower had cool gray marble and a busy mosaic floor that required constant maintenance.

With that in mind, we made choices that were warmer and more organic in texture and pattern, but still calm, neutral, and bright enough for a small space. And opted for materials and patterns that would be easy to clean and maintain over time.

3x12 ceramic tiles run vertically rather than in a traditional brick pattern, which does two things: it creates a cleaner, quieter visual, and it channels water down the wall so the grout stays cleaner longer. The floors are porcelain in simple square and rectangle shapes that don't compete with the star of the bathroom...the quartzite.

Next month we begin an exterior transformation on our 1923 Portland craftsman, and I'm bringing you along for all of it.

Here's the reality: even a designer's house needs work. The paint is literally falling off the siding (not shown in these cheerful photos). The deck has decades of peeling paint, some of which almost certainly has lead in it (see last image for a visual of that mess). The railing design collects water and creates rot. None of it is structural, which is a win, but there's a list.

And this is exactly how I approach every project. You start with what's actually wrong, not just what looks wrong. Then you make a plan that accounts for your real life.

For us, that means two dogs who want to be on the front porch with us, and neighbors who don't necessarily want 60 pounds of enthusiasm rushing the fence every time they walk by. So yes, we're updating the porch ceiling, railing, and flooring. And yes, we're swapping the Roman-style pillars for square ones, partly because that's my preference for a smaller craftsman, and partly because square pillars make it possible to add a discrete dog gate.

That's intentional design. It's not just about beautiful. It's about listening to how you actually live and translating that into something that works for everyone in your household, dogs included.

Sharing a before & after of our bathroom renovation here in Portland. This space went from cold and plain to a warm reflection of our style. I’m so happy with how the vanity area turned out; it finally feels like it has personality. One of my favorite details is the drawer k***s. They bring a playful element to the space that was missing before.
