Sign up to our last conversation project of the term! We are partnering with ASPSU, Menasa, Cultural reasource centers, and oregon humanities to bring students and community members together for an open and engaging conversation about interpersonal conflict, communication, and growth. LINK IN BIO

Interpersonal conflict and disagreement are part of being in relationship with others, but many of us fear conflict. Motivated by many factors, including cultural norms, concern for social consequences, and personal safety, many of us avoid it. What might we learn and how might we grow by making more room for conflict?

Join us tommorow for one of last service events of the term! As a group, we will remove noxious weeds, including English ivy, clematis, and Himalayan/Armenian blackberry. By removing invasive, non-native plant species, we will help to support wildlife, water runoff, and prevent erosion. Volunteer tasks will include hiking uneven terrain and the use of small tools. Gloves, tools, supervision, and directions will be provided. LINK IN BIO

Student Leaders for Service is a year-long leadership program that facilitates PSU students’ involvement in both the Portland State and greater Portland communities. Students serve at a community partner site on a weekly basis, supporting the work of the community partner and bringing its mission back to the PSU campus. Whether your passion is education, hunger, housing, health, racial justice, sustainability, or something else, SLS positions range every year in focus and can apply to all sorts of interests and majors. Interpersonal conflict and disagreement are part of being in relationship with others, but many of us fear conflict. Motivated by many factors, including cultural norms, concern for social consequences, and personal safety, many of us avoid it. What might we learn and how might we grow by making more room for conflict? What skills do we need to responsibly engage in conflict? How can shifting our relationship to conflict offer us new perspectives about ourselves and the groups we belong to? This community conversation is an opportunity to reflect on our relationships to interpersonal conflict outside of where we might most often encounter it, like the heated context of an argument at the dinner table or online. Facilitator Emily Squires will lead a judgement- and jargon-free discussion of what we mean when we say conflict, considering how interpersonal conflict shapes our lives and tools to use when experiencing it. Do you love working with kids? Hang out with the kindergarteners from Alder as they visit PSU and get a feel for "being at college"!
Join us for a morning of fun as 60+ kindergarteners from Alder Elementary descend on the PSU campus for a morning! Students will split into groups to help three classes of kindergarteners "experience college" for day. You'll help kiddos navigate a student activities tabling fair in the morning, sit with them as they eat their lunch and talk to them about what they love to do and what you love about college, and then support them as they rotate through some short hands-on activities designed to get them engaged and excited about the idea of college. Other times, she is upstairs helping to keep the shoe room organized as new shoes are donated. Sometimes she gets to help pick out clothes that will be given to those coming from difficult situations in need of support. Every once in a while, she helps redecorate The Shopp by changing mannequins, swapping items on display, and ensuring everything looks orderly and intentional. ....Read more on our new Blog!

Samantha Her has been working with IRCO as a Student Leader for Service (SLS) during the 2025-26 school year.

Samantha said, “IRCO provides free tax assistance for anyone who makes under $100,000 a year. I do tax intake, which means identifying what each person does for work and doing tax preparation.
IRCO is a great opportunity to meet community members. We help lots of immigrants and refugees, and people are so relieved when we help them do their taxes.
I’m a finance major and this program let me see what accounting is like hands-on. It will also open up job opportunities in the future.
I like being a Student Leader for Service because it’s motivating to be around a culture of very passionate people.” ....Read more on our new Blog!

Every Monday, Ghazal Alzghoul arrives at Clay Street Table in the South Park Blocks at 10 am. She and other volunteers prepare 160 sack lunches in the large kitchen. At 12:30, they pack brown paper bags containing sandwiches into carts and roll them out to the Park Blocks in increments. Two volunteers run the popular coffee station, while others hand out lunches.

On this rainy February day, there was no time amidst the rush to prepare hot chocolate like she usually does, so she handed out cookies instead. . ....Read more on our new Blog!
