A pool table I custom-built in a Southwestern style for a residence in the Phoenix area. See my previous post for a close-up of the turquoise and mother-of-pearl sight. The building is adobe, and the table sits in a room with retractable doors and windows, giving the space an indoor-outdoor flow while keeping the table protected from the elements.

From the archives: Prototype for Chaise Longue (La Chaise), 1948, by Charles and Ray Eames, inspired by Gaston Lachaise’s 1927 sculpture Reclining N**e and nicknamed after the artist. “It did not receive a prize because it was considered too ‘specialized in use’ and too expensive to manufacture at the time. However, it was highlighted by the judges, who admired its "striking, good-looking and inventive" molded construction. La Chaise finally went into production in 1990 and is now one of the Eameses's signature works.”

Happy birthday to Alvar Aalto, born on this day in 1898. Image courtesy of the Alvar Aalto Museum. “Stool 60” was first displayed to the public in 1933 and is used today as seating for customers at Apple Stores around the world. One secret of the stool’s enduring success lies in the distinctive bend of the legs, made possible by the uniquely flexible nature of Finnish birch. The epitome of functionalist furniture design, Stool 60 is notable for its adaptability - it can also be used as a side table or a plant stand - and its stackability, which allows dozens of stools to occupy the same amount of space as just one.
