Smaller homes can be the most challenging. An accessory dwelling unit has size, height and sometimes other limits that are much more restrictive than a primary residence.

At MFD we like to get creative and push the limits. And this hillside ADU in San Rafael is no exception.

After many years of efforts I am proud to share some images from one of our design projects.

This project was very difficult to get through the entitlement process requiring several zoning code variances, a shadow study, and historic resource evaluation as well as 3 planning commission hearings. Props to Bret Matson of Matson Construction Management for bringing our shared vision to life.

We have worked many projects in many states over the years and these small California jurisdictions can be the most difficult to get through the entitlement process.
