This little public radio show team sure knows how to throw a BIG birthday surprise!

Last week, we celebrated our host Luke Burbank's 50th with a GIANT CAKE that comes with a very sweet announcer (Elena Passarello) inside. This is what dreams are made of. She’s been waiting to do that for a long time.

In last week’s new episode, podcaster Avery Trufelman (“99% Invisible”) talks about the fascinating origins of menswear fashion.

Her new show “Articles of Interest” is all about what we wear. Avery also sat down with our friends at Ear Hustle to dive deeper into prison uniforms for an episode.

We highly recommend checking it out!

Listen to our full interview with Avery at livewireradio.org/episodes/717.

We’re heartbroken to share the news that filmmaker and friend of the show Brian Lindstrom passed away last week. Brian joined us several times over the years, most recently in May 2024 to discuss his documentary “Lost Angel: The Genius of Judee Sill.” Through films like “Mothering Inside” (which helped lead to Oregon becoming the first state to pass a Bill of Rights for the Children of Incarcerated Parents) and “Alien Boy: The Life and Death of James Chasse,” he devoted his career to telling the stories of people society too often ignores, with unflinching honesty and extraordinary compassion. We’ll miss him deeply. ❤️

It's a good day for some radio! ⚡

In today's brand new episode... Avery Trufelman, creator and host of the fashion podcast "Articles of Interest," unpacks how the US military of World War II came to shape menswear as we know it today; stand-up comedian Kyle Kinane comes to terms with the amount of micro (and macro) plastics in this body; and Brazilian musical duo Johnny Franco and His Real Brother Dom deliver their delightful shtick with tunes, jokes, and old-school radio charm.

In two days! 🎙️ “You’re Wrong About” podcast host Sarah Marshall returns to Live Wire with a new project to share, a CBC limited-series all about the Satanic Panic called “The Devil You Know.”

Sarah () can turn any topic into the most fascinating deep dive you’ve ever done. Last time we had her on the show, she explained how our culture’s memory of certain stories, like this one about “The Shoe Bomber” Richard Reid, can permeate our lives and the ways we live them.

The show is this Thursday, 7:30pm at the Alberta Rose Theatre. Will we see you there?

HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY, LUKE! ✨

Our beloved host is kind of like the Pikachu of public radio. Today may not be a new episode day, but our re-run features a throwback to this Best News story about middle-aged men trading cards in Kawara, Japan. Well, although 50 years is still young, we thought it’d only be appropriate to celebrate this way.

If you want to express your support for Luke, as well as the incredible guests he’ll be interviewing, grab a ticket to our show next Thursday at the Alberta Rose Theatre!

This audio has been edited for time. You can listen to the full segment at www.livewireradio.org/episodes/716.

This Starbucks customer didn’t deem Skyler Higley or the other Black man in the room trustworthy enough to watch her laptop while she went to the bathroom.

“[As] I’m sitting there in that racial tension,” he realizes, “this is a teachable moment.” ☕️
