🌎 Earthquakes can happen anytime, so know what to do wherever you are! The Great Shakeout is a chance to practice. So, set your phone alarm, and wherever you are 10:16:

🧍‍♀️ Drop, Cover, and Hold On
🚗 If in a car: pull over safely and stay put.
🛏️ If in bed: stay there and cover your head and neck.
♿ If in a wheelchair: lock your wheels and protect your head and neck.

Every home and workplace is different, so know your surroundings and plan accordingly.

🚨 Tsunami Watch Issued for West Coast 🚨
A powerful 8.7 earthquake struck Russia this afternoon, and NOAA has issued a tsunami watch along the U.S. West Coast.

A tsunami watch means a distant tsunami is possible—stay alert and be ready to act.

🌊 Waves could begin arriving around 11:40 PM, with exact times varying by location.
📻 If you’re near the coast, check local news, official alerts, and NOAA Weather Radio.

Now is the time to:
✔️ Review tsunami evacuation routes
✔️ Identify higher ground and safe areas
✔️ Stay connected to official updates

Hey PNW Peeps…and beyond…tomorrow the new book Tilt, by Portland science journalist is being released. The novel chronicles one woman’s journey in the first 24 hours after the Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake. I can’t wait to read it! 🌊 On this day in 1700, the Cascadia Subduction Zone unleashed a massive earthquake estimated at magnitude 9.0, triggering a tsunami that devastated the Pacific Northwest coast and even reached Japan!

Evidence of this quake remains in the “ghost forests” of Neskowin , Oregon (pictured) - where ancient cedar trees, killed by sudden land subsidence, still stand as reminders of nature’s power.

Prepare today:
• Have a 2-week emergency kit
• Create an emergency plan with loved ones
• If at the coast, always know your evacuation routes

A magnitude 7 earthquake struck about an hour ago 60 miles off the coast of Ferndale CA. There is a tsunami warning that stretches from 10 miles south of Florence, OR to Davenport, just N of Santa Cruz.
