Sending love to all who need it this Mother’s Day. Life is complicated and difficult even when things go ‘as planned.’ Remember, there are no bad feelings! Feelings are information about ourselves and what we need…..and it’s very normal to have many feelings at once. Whatever today brings you, please be kind to yourself!

It’s Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month and I want to highlight Postpartum Support International (PSI) and the many ways they support perinatal mental health. PSI educates providers (including offering medication consultation for prescribers) and connects folx with the help they need including group support, therapy, and various additional resources. Go to www.postpartum.net to learn more!

While I sometimes struggle to find time in my schedule, I sure do love any opportunity to collaborate with other providers and organizations who support our perinatal population. Thank you for supporting folks during one of the most challenging times in parenting! .j.norcott.ibclc you specifically are changing lives on a daily basis! Having compassionate support around feeding is a game changer and mitigating factor when it comes to mental health outcomes. Big ❤️

This week, we are focusing on Birth Trauma Awareness. As many as 1 in 3 birthers experience birth trauma and subsequent symptoms of post traumatic distress. A common myth about birth trauma is that it only occurs following medical emergencies. For this reason, many are surprised by #2 and #7 on this list. Seeking support during pregnancy and having a doula present at birth can be protective factors. Of course there are times birth trauma is unavoidable. If you have had a difficult delivery and feel it is impacting your ability to thrive postpartum, please reach out to find a therapist who is experienced working with birth trauma.

Today is World Maternal Mental Health Day. From PSI: ‘In many countries (US included), as many as 1 in 5 new mothers experience some type of perinatal mental health disorder. These illnesses frequently go unnoticed and untreated, often with tragic and long-term consequences to both mother and child.’ You can visit wmmhday.postpartum.net to learn more, including how to get involved in promoting increased awareness about perinatal mental health around the world. I will share some of my story in the comments below.

Thinking of everyone who is experiencing grief as part of their mothering/parenting journey today and every day. As we approach Mother’s Day, I am reminded what a vulnerable and tender time it is for many. If this is true for you, please know you are not alone. I see you. Sending love!

October is Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month. Experiencing pregnancy or infant loss can be extremely lonely and isolating. It is so important to feel seen, to experience others’ ability to witness your grief without toxic positivity or other attempts at ‘fixing’ your pain. If you have experienced loss, please know you are not alone. is a wonderful resource in Maine, dedicated to supporting parents who have experienced the loss of a child.
