Last week's 4–5 mystery trip sparked plenty of guesses—from tea with the King to the Toothpick Olympics to pickle farm tasting to donut planting. But the real destination was much better: a beautiful day spent together at Crescent Beach.☀️

Last week, ten Waynflete students traveled to the Maine Junior Classical League Spring Convention in Winthrop for two packed days of academic competitions, creative contests, certamen (a team-based Latin trivia game ), athletics, and community-building centered around a shared love of Latin and classical studies.

Our students had an outstanding showing throughout the event, earning top finishes across academic testing, creative arts, and athletic competitions—including a third consecutive 1st-place finish in novice certamen. Highlights included first-place awards for Henry '31, Olivia '30, Adam '29, and Abraham '30, plus a 2nd-place finish in the t-shirt design contest for Waynflete's first-ever JCL shirt, designed by Luke '30.

Special congratulations to Mukhtar '26, who was honored with the prestigious Margaret G. Cook Award for his years of leadership and service to the MEJCL as Torch Editor—the first Waynflete student elected to state office in the organization’s history!

On Friday, Middle School students in our BIPOC group participated in a walking tour with Black Travel Maine, exploring the rich and often overlooked history of Black Mainers. Guided by Merita McKenzie, students walked Portland’s Freedom Trail, learned about slavery and abolition in Maine, and visited the historic Abyssinian Meeting House, one of the oldest standing Black churches in the United States. The experience offered students a deeper understanding of the history connected to the state they call home, while also creating space for reflection and pride.

Competing in a two-day tournament in Northampton, MA, the FLEET Ultimate teams battled through intense heat, close matchups, and high-level competition.

The boys’ team advanced all the way to the championship game and earned 1st place in the Spirit Prize, a recognition of sportsmanship that sits at the heart of Ultimate Frisbee. The girls-matching team took on the challenge of moving up to the highly competitive “A” division after winning their bracket the past two years, gaining valuable experience and continuing to grow throughout the weekend.

A shoutout to Waynflete faculty member Page for building an program that continues to thrive—not only at the high school level, but through alumni success at recent New England College Regionals and College Nationals as well.
