Surrounded by books, I’m spoiled for choice when it comes to each . What to read?! This Italian novel has been on my TBR for quite awhile, ever since it received a award. Formally unconventional, but deeply sensual (the tastes, the smells, the feelings of life), it follows a middle aged woman who embarks on a new phase of life by opening a restaurant. Her memories and thoughts about the future flow directly into recipes as she cooks for those around her. While invoking the legacy of women’s work in the kitchen, she also claims new independence and agency.

Deeply saddened to her that the brilliant artist and author Marjane Satrapi has passed away. With everything happening in Iran right now, we could use her voice more than ever. She leaves behind a rich legacy, including her hugely influential Persepolis, and her collaborative graphic novel, Woman Life Freedom, that captured the 2022 protests for women’s rights in Iran.

Cookbooks have always been one of our favorite modes of “travel” … diving deep into the edible culture of peoples and places around the world. These four recent arrivals are as visually enticing as they are interesting. Somalia, Lebanon, Laos or Türkiye — I want to eat my way around them all!

What a week of change! We knocked down a wall, built some bookshelves, and constructed a very official-looking kiosk. And all told: we’ve expanded to a ✨ s p a c i o u s ✨400 square feet, giving us room to bring in exciting new books (more on that soon…). A huge thanks to for continuing to make space for our big ideas! Swipe through to see the construction 🚧

Great timing for more copies of Taiwan Travelogue to arrive at the shop … it just won International award this week! 🎉 Congratulations to author Yáng Shuāng-Zǐ and translator Lin King on the much-deserved award … a first for Mandarin, and from Taiwan, no less. Emotionally layered, heady and formally inventive, this has been one of my favorite books of the last few years.
