September is not just National Translation Month … it’s also ! We love introducing children and families to new global picture books and translated chapter books. It is so meaningful when kids see themselves and their families’ cultures reflected on the page, and when they discover new perspectives thst help them connect across divides. This year marks the 10th (!!) year of doing incredible work highlighting global kids books and pushing for ever-increasing diversity. Come read the world with us!

Planes, trains, and automobiles! (And boats and bikes, too!) An old steamer trunk and an airplane galley cart have new life as a display for all of our transit nerd books. ✈️🚂🚢 Plane spotters and rail riders, unite!

As the seasons turn, the world comes alive with celebrations. The next few days will see both the Mid Autumn Festival in China and Chuseok in Korea. Gather with loved ones, give thanks, and enjoy some festive foods!

The American Literary Translators Association conference is coming to Portland next month, when hundreds of translators will gather to talk about their craft! On Thursday, October 22, we’ll play host to more than a dozen of them for a very special night of prose and poetry from the annual Best Literary Translations anthology. Please join us to hear works translated from Arabic, Braj Bhasha, Old English, Polish, Spanish, Swahili and more. It will be a celebration of the art and work and dedication of translators!

Did you know that September is Hawaiian History Month? From fiction to guidebooks, native authors to immigrant writers, we have books that show another side to the islands that tourists know. 🌺🌋

National Hispanic Heritage Month is a great excuse to unveil our latest addition to the shop: books in Spanish! Whether you’re a native speaker or an eager student looking for literature to push your learning, we have novels, stories, and poetry by authors from around the Spanish-speaking world.
