Sometimes a new career begins with the chance to start again.

One member of the Mercy team came to Maine ready to work, support a family, and build a new future.

The first opportunity was an entry-level position at Northern Light Mercy Hospital. But it wasn't the end of the journey.

Through Mercy's +MPower workforce development program, this employee received education and support to build new skills and begin working toward a career caring directly for patients.

The moms and team at McAuley Residence in Bangor recently gathered for a special tea celebrating the life and legacy of Catherine McAuley, founder of the Sisters of Mercy.

The “comfortable cup of tea” is a beloved Mercy tradition. Near the end of her life, Catherine remained focused on the well-being of those around her, asking that the Sisters gathered with her be cared for with a cup of tea. That simple gesture became a lasting symbol of hospitality, compassion, and caring for one another.

Over tea and treats, the Bangor team shared Catherine’s story and reflected on how her spirit of Mercy continues through McAuley Residence today. It was an especially meaningful way to introduce some of the program’s newer moms to the woman whose vision continues to inspire their community.

We look forward to carrying on this tradition across Mercy next week as we celebrate Mercy Day.

On Monday, September 28, community and business leaders will come together at Woodlands Golf Club in Falmouth for Northern Light Mercy Hospital's Annual Partnership in Caring Golf Classic.

This year's tournament supports +MPower, Mercy's workforce development program, helping people gain the education, skills, and support they need to build meaningful careers and strengthen Maine's healthcare workforce.

Every round played helps open a door.

Ellie was nominated by a colleague who described the compassion, creativity, and selflessness she brings to her work every day.

“She consistently goes above and beyond to make her patients feel cared for and supported. She finds thoughtful and creative ways to lift patients’ spirits, creating meaningful activities and personal touches tailored to their interests and needs.”

Her nomination also highlighted the support Ellie provides to her fellow nurses, including stepping in to care for a colleague’s patients so that colleague could complete required competencies during a recent skills fair.

More than 35 refurbished bikes. Even more opportunities for independence. 🚲

This National Recovery Month, McAuley Residence joined M&T Bank, Portland Gear Hub, and the United Recovery Fund to help provide refurbished bicycles to people working toward long-term recovery and self-sufficiency in Portland.

Through the partnership, 23 McAuley moms and their children received bikes, along with helmets and other safety equipment. For families at McAuley, having reliable transportation can mean an easier way to get to work, medical appointments, the grocery store and other places that keep daily life moving forward.
