i love rolling hills, wildflower fields, and epic views as much as the next photographer, but there is something really special about staying close to home, too.

kids are comfortable here. it’s familiar. the swing they’ve had you push them on a thousand times. the books they ask you to read over and over. the patch of grass where the run through the sprinkler all summer. the first steps they learned to climb.

there’s no shortage of beautiful locations, whether you want to frolic through grassy fields, run barefoot on the beach, let your kids skip rocks in the river, explore the mountains, or stay cozy in your own backyard… the sun is (almost) guaranteed to show up for us.

if you’re thinking about summer photos and have a vision in mind, here are a few things to consider:

• if you’re hoping for flowers, aim for june–early july for wildflowers, or august for sunflowers
• for lush green grass, early june is your sweet spot
• dreaming of tall golden grass + glowy light? that’s in late july–august

these photos are some of my most cherished possessions.

as a mom (and especially as a single mom), no one is taking photos of me with my daughter.

so i gift them to myself each year.

because this is us, and i want to remember us at every stage.

of course i have hundreds of snapshots and selfies, and i love those too.

but there’s something special and intentional about having professional photos taken. choosing what to wear, trusting someone else’s vision behind the camera, making a day of it.

it feels like sending a love note to our future selves saying: this matters 💕
