To the Luck of the Irish, we’re wishing you a joyful St. Patrick’s Day!
EileanĂłir a RĂşin / Wild Mountain Thyme
Traditional Gaelic/Irish, arranged by Antonia Forster
According to Gaelic folklore, Eileanóir Chaomhanach eloped with Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh, a 17th-century harpist and poet based in Pallas, County Wexford, Ireland. Eileanóir, the daughter of Sir Morgan Kavanagh of Poll an Mhointigh, wasn’t originally destined to marry Cearbhall. The story tells us that Cearbhall, hired to play music at her wedding to another man, fell hopelessly in love with the bride as soon as he saw her. Inspired, he composed the song “Eileanóir a Rúin” on the spot to win her heart and persuade her to run away with him.
We’ve blended “Eileanóir a Rúin” with “Wild Mountain Thyme,” a beloved folk song with Scottish roots that was famously adapted by Francis McPeake, a member of Belfast’s musical McPeake family. This timeless melody carries with it an invitation for love to escape into the beauty of nature.
O, the summer time is comin',
And the trees are sweetly bloomin',
And the wild mountain thyme
Grows around the purple heather.
Will you go, lassie, go?
