Phyllostachys vivax, or Giant Timber Bamboo, is a large, fast-growing running bamboo known for its vigor, cold hardiness (to -5°F), and tall, strong culms (canes) that can reach 40-70 feet in height. It’s used for screens, hedges, and timber, with edible shoots and a tropical look, but its aggressive running nature requires a rhizome barrier to control spread. Varieties like ‘Aureocaulis’ feature striking golden canes with green stripes.
