Attended Nonprofit Impact Conference at the loveliest venue. There were windows all along the wall of the conference ballroom. Amazing! Conference rooms are usually dark and make you sleepy. This, on the other hand, was delightful :)

You’d be justified to feel anxiety about the time investment of writing a grant application. Fulfilling the requirements is an involved process and throughout this process a lingering doubt may nag at you. “What if we’re not awarded funding and all this effort is wasted?” While it’s disappointing when a grant proposal fails to acquire funding, that effort isn’t necessarily wasted, because there is value in going through the grant application process itself.

How do grant applications get selected by funders and is it fair?

Funders receive hundreds of applications for each grant opportunity so they need to develop processes to review applications carefully and efficiently in order to select grant awardees. As a matter of fact, a good scenario gives you about a 30% chance of having your application selected, so it can already feel like the cards are stacked against you. I’ve even heard concerns from organizations that are not awarded funding that they feel it's not a fair process and question how these decisions get made. Similar to applying for a job, we can wonder if they already have someone in mind? Were they going on gut-feel? Were they being biased?
