I wrote Bywater after my first visit to New Orleans. My friends lived in the Bywater neighborhood, and it was my introduction to that wonderful city. I loved how you could be walking down a quiet stretch of houses and suddenly find yourself at a corner store, or inside a bar like BJ’s Lounge or Bacchanal — both regular stops back then.

Most of these photos are from that part of town, where the channel meets the Mississippi River. We’d walk along the levee, sit by the water, or bring a picnic up there for sunset. That place got under my skin in the best way.

While the song moves through different parts of New Orleans, it all started in that neighborhood. I liked turning “Bywater” into “by the water,” letting the name shape the heart of the song.

I’ll be sharing more thoughts, stories, and little windows into this track and others. If you’re into that kind of behind-the-scenes stuff, stick around.

The Wandering Kind will be joining me in Seattle and Vashon Island. We'll be playing songs from Everywhere is Close to Somewhere Else and a few new ones too.

We're hitting the roads in a few days! Why?
Because these songs were born of the road, and that's where they belong.
Because we've got strangers to turn into friends, and friends to catch up with.
Because my feet are itchin!

It all kicks off Tuesday, May 13th at , then the band and I head up to 5/15.

We're gathering that evening to welcome Shlomo Franklin to PDX on his tour from Nashville and show him how much Portland loves singer-songwriters! As independent musicians growing our name in PDX, it means the world to have people show up and pack these venues. I am excited to be joining Artichoke Community Music's Thursday Night Coffeehouse Showcase next Thursday, Feb. 13th. I'll share the night with Richard Tillinghast, Clara Schneid, and Amber Russell - all phenomenal songwriters I am excited to sit back and watch from my perch on stage.
