“Patient attempted su***de because they can't afford their rent anymore. The system is convincing me their behavior was due to their depression, impulsivity, personality disorder & unhealthy coping mechanism.
We are too afraid to mention capitalism, and housing crisis.” - Dr.
LET’S BECOME UNAFRAID.
We can’t continue to practice medicine how we used to. Patients don’t exist in isolation; they exist as part of a social context. Providing effective care to patients means taking into account that context.
Let’s become unafraid to name and to dismantle the social and economic systems and policies that adversely impact the health of our patients.

Tomorrow, July 12 at 5 PM ET: Join us for this month's Mental Health Practice Space. This is a monthly 2-hour, virtual space for organizers and groups envisioning, designing, and implementing non-police mental health crisis response programs. These sessions are not recorded. ASL, Spanish interpretation, and live captioning will be provided.
As a reminder, this is an abolitionist space. This is NOT a space for law enforcement or people or organizations engaged in police training or mental health crisis response models that involve police in any way. In this space we do not support forced medical treatment and psychiatric incarceration as a carceral and punitive response to mental health needs.
