Founded in 2012, Eutectic Gallery plays a vital role in the development of the contemporary ceramics

Similar to the relationship between the components that make up clay and their proportions, Eutectic Gallery wishes to explore the relationship between an artist’s process, product, & concept, and the public’s interpretation of, interaction with, and critique of said work. Eutectic is about building relationships: with contemporary ceramic artists, with the greater PDX art community, with local schools and colleges, and with those seeking a greater exposure and introduction to fine ceramic art.

Greater Sage-Grouse - Erma Hayman, 2025
Ceramic, Underglaze, Ribbon
16 x 16 x 7.50 in
$715

Erma Hayman 1907-2009
A vital advocate for her community, Erma Hayman worked tirelessly to uplift her Boise, Idaho neighborhood after being prevented from buying property elsewhere due to racial discrimination. She served many years on her neighborhood council, and acted as its chair from 1973 - 1974. Her neighborhood became the most culturally and ethnically diverse area in the city of Boise for most of the twentieth century, housing working-class families from all over the world.

Greater sage-grouse populations have declined by almost 3.5% per year, resulting in a cumulative decline of 83% from 1966 to 2015.

Bendire's Thrasher - Jim Corbett, 2025
Ceramic, Underglaze, Ribbon
14 x 10 x 4 in

Jim Corbett 1933-2001
A rancher, writer, philosopher, and humanitarian, Corbett was educated at Harvard in philosophy before settling in the Southwest as a rancher. In the early 80s he began to smuggle Central American refugees across the U.S.-Mexico border, due to their inhumane treatment by federal officials in the U.S. and the governments of their countries. He considered this an act of civil duty, and shepherded hundreds of refugees to the United States. In 1985 Corbett was one of eleven defendants in the Arizona Sanctuary Trial, and one of the three acquitted. After his trial, Corbett continued his work smuggling refugees, arguing that what he was doing was not civil disobedience, but civil initiative to help uphold asylum laws.

Bendire’s Thrasher populations declined by an estimated 4% per year between 1968 and 2015, resulting in a cumulative decline of about 86% during that time. If current rates of decline continue, Bendire's Thrasher will lose another half of its population by 2035.
