Join us for a long overdue warm welcome to Coach Iris! Iris has been coaching at Cully Strength since December and has been an absolute joy to have on the team.

What started as an active lifestyle from a young age turned into a passion for understanding how the body adapts throughout training as well as injury. She began her career as a sports performance coach for athletes, and throughout the years began working with adults who want to reintroduce movement into their lifestyle, but aren’t sure where to begin.

Online fitness information can feel loud and overwhelming, so she aims to simplify the process and help people feel confident in their training. Iris is especially passionate about getting women under a barbell—building strength not just physically, but mentally—through education, curiosity, and intentional movement.

Outside of the gym you can find her playing indoor and outdoor volleyball, pickleball, traveling, reading, exploring Portland, and stopping any and every individual to pet their dog.

She coaches classes in the mornings Monday through Friday, and is currently accepting new clients for personal training! Known for starting class with a quirky “question of the day”, she’s bound to bring a smile and a laugh to every workout. Her infectious energy, passion for coaching, and impressive sneaker game make her an invaluable member of the team. We couldn’t be happier to have her at Cully Strength!

Let’s talk KETTLEBELLS! 💥

Kettlebell training is a fantastic way to improve both strength AND conditioning. Kettlebells can be used for a total body workout or as accessory work for weightlifting.

The versatility of the bell allows for workouts to be complex or straight forward, time efficient and available to all levels. The compact utility of the kettlebell allows for a variety of sizes at home without having the need of an entire gym. You can tuck them away easily and crush the hardest of workouts in a small space. Bilateral, unilateral, contralateral, etc - kettlebells cover all ranges of motion and full body connection. ♥️

Kettlebell training allows for high recoverability and brings benefits both physically and mentally. As Coach Mike says, “you look pretty bad ass when you lock it all in and put 100% on the line. It can be conditioning, it can be strength, it can be core. It’s whatever you want!”

Coach Mike leads the Cully Strength kettlebell class every Saturday at 9am, $15 drop in. All bodies and levels welcome!

So what drew Coach Mike to kettlebells?

His introduction to kettlebells was primarily as a conditioning tool during his time training MMA/ Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and almost exclusively kettlebell swings. As he started using them more he began to see more options in kettlebell functionality. From there his curiosity consumed him. The pandemic offered him more time to put into kettlebells and other unconventional training tools like steel maces/ clubs.

Also, metal goes better with kettlebells. 🤘🏼

✨MOBILITY✨

What is it and why does it matter?

It’s the ability of our joints to move actively through their full range of motion. It’s imperative for injury prevention, improved athletic performance (think deeper squats), recovery, and overall physical longevity.

At Cully Strength, we have a mobility class designed specifically for those who participate in weightlifting, powerlifting, and overall strength training. It’s led by Coach Julia every Saturday at noon, with all bodies and levels welcome. It’s a $15 drop in, no need to sign up in advance!

Coach Julia started the mobility class at Cully Strength to help people move with more ease, confidence, and resilience—both in training and in daily life. Her interest in the human movement system began years ago after she was involved in a car accident in New Zealand as a pedestrian, an experience that sparked a deep curiosity about how the body heals, adapts, and regains function.

That curiosity led her to pursue a Master’s in Exercise Physiology and a career focused on movement quality and long-term health. She began her professional path at GoodLife Fitness in Vancouver, BC, and later worked closely with DPT Gale McIntosh, assisting in her clinic and gaining hands-on exposure to movement assessment and rehabilitation principles.

After starting the Saturday mobility class about a year ago, she continued her education by completing the PPSC Pain-Free Mobility Certification. The core mission of the class is accessibility and impact—helping as many people as possible move better and feel better—which is why the mobility classes are now also available on YouTube, extending support beyond the gym and into the broader community.
