A moving art installation is coming to Whitehall to honor lives lost to gun violence. The installation at 1101 South Mears Ave. commemorates the average annual number of deaths due to gun violence in Michigan.
MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI -- An art installation featuring 1,406 handmade origami Soul Boxes will be on display at Lebanon Lutheran Church in Whitehall from May 2-14, with each box representing a life lost to gun violence.
Hundreds of area community members created the boxes as part of a national educational effort about gun violence impacts. Gun Violence Prevention Teams from St. John’s Episcopal Church and the United Methodist Church of the Dunes in Grand Haven launched the project last year. The display is free and open to the public.
Lebanon Lutheran Church will be open for viewing from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to noon on Sundays. Extended hours include 1-4 p.m. Saturday, May 9, and 4-7 p.m. Monday, May 11. Gun safety information will be available at the site
Community members can participate in Soul Box folding events at several locations. The White Lake Senior Center on Ferry Street in Montague will host a session Monday, May 4, from noon to 3 p.m. White Lake Community Library on White Lake Drive offers folding from 4-7 p.m. the same day.
Additional sessions will take place Tuesday, May 12, from 2-4:30 p.m. at the Montague Branch of Muskegon Area District Library and Thursday, May 14, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Arts Council of White Lake—Nuveen Center in Whitehall. Boxes created at these events will be displayed at a later date.
