A painterly rendering for a schematic design by .hanby.

Painterly renderings can't do everything a photorealistic one can, but for my money, they can't be matched when it comes to selling the vision of a project. They allow your clients to imagine the whole project without getting hung up on details. And they can be successfully executed within a timeframe and budget that works with the fast–paced, iterative nature of the design process.

This painting from a few years ago was an early proof of concept, based off a photorealistic rendering I had made for .hanby and . It illustrated to me just how much can be achieved with just a few well placed brushstrokes, and set me down the course of learning how to create painterly renderings without the need for all of the time–consuming labor required for a successful photorealistic rendering.

Beautiful can also be fast.

This was one of two beliefs that started my research into a reliable 3d to 2d workflow for Painterly Renderings.

Above is a photostudy made a few years ago as proof of that belief. It's based on my favorite photo of by its owner, Sidney Bensimon. The original photo of this stunning mid–coast house, designed by , can be found in my stories.

I already knew—given enough time—I could recreate the photo in 3d, but what could I do in a few hours? And would that be useful to architects? The results sent me down a long road of figuring out how to get similar results with similar efficiency when starting from a very basic 3d model, and they ended with Painterly Rendering.

As compared to photorealism, painterly renderings want to say, "This is what could be," rather than, "This is what will be." Two very different openings to a conversation.

It’s always a challenge to find the time to create powerful imagery for design presentations. Yet every architect knows the importance of images in selling a design proposal. Photorealism—when done well—takes a good amount of time and presents every detail as fully resolved. When it’s done poorly, clients struggle to see past the images to the merits of your design. A Painterly Rendering solves these problems and more.

If you'd like to hear more about how Painterly Renderings can help your design presentations of if you're interested in having one of your projects painted, free of charge, get in touch through the link in our bio.
