I was honored to support the Family Financial Protection Act this session - ensuring families do not fall victim to predatory collection practices as they work to pay off debt.
The Family Financial Protection Act ( ) passed in the legislature and is now headed to the Governor's desk!
The bill is a HUGE win, providing needed relief for Oregon families! It improves outdated and flawed consumer protection and debt laws, protecting Oregonians while they pay off debt or fight unfair collections.
These protections include:
💵 Increases wages protected from garnishment
🏦 Safeguards $2,500 in someone's bank account to cover basic needs while paying off debt
🏡 Increases protections to prevent loss of housing during debt collections
⏲️ Improves protections for consumers under the Unfair Debt Collection Practices Act, increasing the time consumers have to file a complaint to 3 years
💼 Protects consumers from paying unfair attorney fees resulting from civil lawsuits for unlawful collection practices.
Many thanks to the elected officials and the lead and partner organizations whose hard work and collaborative efforts made this bi-partisan bill possible!

I am overwhelmed with gratitude to the voters of Senate District 24 for electing me to serve as their State Senator. I want to thank all of my campaign staff, supporters, volunteers, donors, and everyone in the district for placing their trust in me to represent them to the fullest. This election is historic as I am now the first Muslim, the first Somali American, and the first former refugee to be elected by the people to serve in the Oregon Senate.
While we have many challenges to face, I believe there is nothing we cannot accomplish if we work together. With economic uncertainty on the rise, we face one of the greatest tests to our resilience and choices about how we will both stabilize our state and build our collective future. As a leader who has navigated innumerable challenges, I am dedicated to empowering our communities and working with my colleagues to better the lives of Oregonians.
Together, we can chart a course that addresses our most pressing issues: housing, the economy, racial equity, climate change, gun violence, crime, and public safety. As your State Senator, I will always serve with my district’s people in mind, working to ensure opportunity for all.

“SEIU supports champions like Senator Kayse Jama because healthcare workers, janitors, care providers, and public workers need elected leaders who support labor unions and fight for fair wages, health care, and secure retirement. Kayse is on the side of working families” - SEIU
